Daughter, 16. Bought her a 924

It all started as a bit of a joke.

Whilst bringing my daughter back home from her school prom in my 997, the conversation drifted on to what cars some of her friends would be getting, and what she would like.

There was the usual list of Fiat 500’s MINIs, Clios etc for many of her friends, whilst my daughter liked the look of early MX5s for their pop up headlights.

“The problem with the MX5s sweetheart” I said, “is that the insurance will be expensive for a 17 / 18 year old girl.”
“If you couldn’t have a MX5, what else would you like?”

“A Porsche Dad”

Oh how we laughed.

Once we got back home and my Wife and daughter had both gone to bed, curiosity got the better of me.

Porsche 924 projects can be had for under £2000.
The insurance on a MINI / Fiat 500 is around £3500 p/a with a black box fitted.
However, the insurance for an 18 year old girl on a Porsche 924 2.0, with one years NCD, is only around £1100 p/a, with NO black box fitted.

No road tax or MOT too boot as well.

At this point, a plan was hatched. Now all I needed to do was sell the idea to the Wife.

Man-maths kicked in over breakfast, (whilst our daughter was still recovering from the night before in bed).

A Fiat 500 or a MINI costs three times as much to buy, costs three times as much to insure, and is a devaluing asset.

A Porsche 924 will probably go up in value, is a cool classic car, and will probably be a ‘forever’ car for our daughter. We could also restore it together in some quality daddy - daughter time.

To my absolute amazement, my Wife, usually boringly sensible, mature and prudent with money, actually said ‘Yes’.

I nearly fell off my chair !

This was on Sunday morning.

By Sunday evening, I’d bought a non running, 35 year old Porsche 924, sight unseen, from the other end of the country for the princely sum of £1500.

Thankfully, the owner was a straight-up, honest guy and an absolute gentleman to deal with, (many thanks for everything Mark).

Two days later, a day before our daughters 16th birthday, a white Ford Ranger, towing a trailer with a blue Porsche 924 pulled up outside our house.

I’m not going to post those pictures or the video of that moment, but my daughter was in tears of joy, and I got the biggest hug from her that I’ve received in years.

To my relief, the car isn’t as rotten as the previous owner had alluded to.

The inner and outer sills are shot, as are the battery tray.
There’s a couple of other scabby bits here and there, the interior is a mess, but overall, it doesn’t seem too bad.

I have a few other projects to complete first before moving onto this one. I aim to have got started with the teardown and engine removal by (hopefully) next spring.

The initial plans are to cut out and replace any rusty sections, strip down and rebuild the engine and gearbox / transaxle, convert to EFI, new wheels, (15”), all new suspension components, a custom interior to my daughter’s design, (she’s hoping to study architecture), and have the car painted in Porsche ‘Super Red Metallic’, as seen on the 992’s.

That’s about all to report for now.

Oh, and of course pics.

That’s a great story, and all the best to you [and your daughter!] with the restoration.

It’s a very long time since I was 16 but like most people I remember getting my first car, a 1963 Austin Mini which was about 2 or 3-years old and already rusting!😀

Keep us posted on progress … or otherwise!🙄

Thanks Jeff.

It was a K10 Nissan Micra for me.

I could only have dreamed of a Porsche at that age.
God bless classic car insurance!

What a great read & your daughter is very lucky to have a Porsche at her age & a great dad!!!!

My first car was a Ford Anglia 1200 Super - what a great car!

As Jeff says, keep us updated on progress

A great story and the car looks very similar to my first Porsche in 1980, a 924 in Minerva Blue.
Jump forward and my eldest son acquired an 'old man gold' 944 when he was 18 and going to university. Again, like your investigations, it was cheaper to insure than more traditional first cars. He's in his early 40's now but has a family Cayenne, so still on brand. Hopefully your daughter will feel the same in the future.

What a great story and a great project too. I suspect the sentence about your daughter in bed might have sounded better as “whilst our daughter was still in bed recovering from the night before”. My daughter is always admonishing me for my inadvertent misdescriptions 🤣.

lol

Ah yes, a Fruaden (sp?) slip.

Yes, what I meant was that it had been a very late night for her, with inevitably, a touch of alcohol involved, (thankfully she’s a very sensible drinker), and she was having a lie in until mid morning.

Wow, lucky daughter! Many of you had quite modern cars as your first car, mine was a 1954 Morris Minor 803cc, bought in 1970 for £40 - sold in 1971 for £25 with it's registration MOT 188 which must now be worth several hundreds. Good luck with the restoration and I look forward to reading about your progress.

Your 16 year old daughter is a sensible drinker . And I thought classic insurers usually expect the classic to be a second car.

This is super cool! The 924 is really easy to work on and once you get your head round kjet its reliable and simply works. Loads of parts are shared with other VW/Audi models and if buying new check with OPC first - the amount of parts people sell as 'rare' can b bought direct from Porsche for half the cost!

Look forward to seeing the progress

It has the potential to be a rust bucket, that would cost more than it's worth to fix.

you are happy chap arent you - mrs kick you out of bed on the wrong side again?

trolling again?

read the thread - this is about creating a bond over a shared interest.. .not making money... not that the RoI is any of your business

I'm a realist, you on the other hand seem to involve yourself with personal attacks. In the same spirit I suggest you go forth and multiply.

Blimey.

Would you care to enlighten me on what I’ve done to upset you?

Yes, my daughter is a careful drinker. I’ve picked her up from plenty of parties, and she’s never been any more than slightly tipsy.

Yes, she’s only just turned 16, but I’d rather she does things with my knowledge and consent, (so that I can advise), than do things behind my back. And with all due respect, how I raise my daughter isn’t really any of your business, or your concern.

As for the car being a rust bucket.
It’s a 35 year old, £1500 car. What exactly would you expect it to be like?

The seller was extremely honest in his description of the vehicle, of the vehicles faults, and sent clear photographs of everything that I asked for.

In fact, the seller, (Mark), was an absolute gentleman throughout the entire process, and was as honest as the day is long. I just wish that more guys selling cars were like him.

I went into this with my eyes wide open, and both my daughter and I are very much looking forwards to tackling this project together.

Not many guys get to spend quality time with their children, especially daughters, as they enter their late teens.

I hope that she is enjoying her 924 and the memories of our time together working on it, long after I’m pushing up the daisy’s.

I’m hearing some horror stories about the K-Jet system.

Am I right in thinking that it’s the exact same system that was used on mk2 Golf GTI’s?

May I ask what are your thoughts on replacing the K-Jet with one the EFI kits from the Romanian fella who developed the supercharger kits for the 924? (sorry, I can’t remember his name).

Kjet was used on MK1 and early MK2 golf gti's, xr3is and a number of other fords, Audi's, BMWs, Volvo's, Porsches - the list goes on and on for 80s cars. Its all about fuel pressures (hot, cold, system and residual), no air leaks and making sure everything is clean. In 13 years the only real issue I've had is the occasional hot start problem.

Morgan is guy you're thinking of (Cyprian) who's developed plug and play supercharger kits for the 924 and efi kits. All well received and supported - I've had moments of temptation with the supercharger kit but still resisting.

In an era of cars with loads of power and torque where youre in big points territory before hitting 3rd it makes the 924 great to drive. Get through the gears with all the noises and smells that make driving great. My daily is. 300bhp cupra and the 924 is my toy.

Great for a first car and to have a project you can do with your daughter is awesome! My eldest son has come along on my 924 journey for 13 years and honestly helped the relationship.

Shout if you have any other questions 😊

Thank you very much Russ.

Will do.

Cheers
