Daily driver poll?

Daily 944 turbo

....with the Bismarck - Grey A6 estate - (for 4 seats now the kids are as tall as their parents) horrible automatic everything, totally immune to feel, zero character, unlike the good old 5 cylinder days.

also a VW MK2 Storm Lance, (did have a Turbo technics 170 conversion Storm back in 1989), and a Mk1 GLi 4 spd Scirocco, Bilsteins, Jetex, etc before that. LJK Setright had a MK1 Storm....Chris Harris of the 70's.

mines been a weekend car for most of the 15 years I've owned it.

But for the last month its been a daily driver. And I love it all the more for the pleasure it brings. Even the daily nose to tail traffic on the way home is not a chore in my manual car. The usual daily driver has an autobox, but even so i still prefer the 944, even in traffic. Once the roads are clear then of course the 944 is splendid.

I too agree, they drive better when used regularly, or is it that i get used to its foibles and stop noticing them?

Mine is a weekend car at the moment. My daily driver is a Volvo S40 diesel, and I hate it! My misses has an automatic Micra, not a fun car to drive, so I end up driving the 944 about twice a week. Once to work during the week, and once just for fun at the weekend. I was pretty surprised to see that I did less than 2000 miles last year though, I really need to drive it more!

I'm not sure I'll be driving it to work during any bad winter weather though, as I take a lot of back roads and already had the rear overtake the front on a rather nasty corner that was sheet ice last year. It was quite fun in the MX-5, as that was a really light car and easy to catch even for someone pretty inexperienced. The 944 though was somewhat more stubborn, and is a car I'd be a lot more upset about if it ended up in a tree.

Mines a weekend car though it does also occasionally get used for a commute when the mood takes me. [8D]

Not been used much in the last couple of months but aiming to change all that presently once our house move is all sorted and life settles down again.

I use my 924S as a daily driver and it is SUPERB over winter. I did fit some leather sports seats (think 944/carrera 3.2/964 type) which are supremely comfortable whilst the original pinstripes are in the loft.

Its doing about 20 000 miles a year but now, with a commute up & down from Newark on Trent to the Lake district each weekend, it'll creep up to nigh on 40 000 miles. I get on average - and I'm not hanging about either, officer- 32 mpg. The car costs me annually, petrol included, 32 p. a mile! No depreciation, no hassle and very reasonable rates for servicing and parts.
Just ordered a fresh set of Conti Winter contacts, PH sportscars in Shardlow will fettle it in for the winter service again and off we go.

In 2010 I did the 6 hours of mallory park in it, and spun the big ends due to faulty cooling fan which then packed up, in conjunction with leaking radiator. I had the engine rebuild and it really is a fast, comfortable car.

In 2015 I think we are embarking on a full resto with recovery of dashboard, sills most likely doing, any other issues rectifying, an LSD, aftermarket air conditioning and then it'll reside in Malta with the in-laws so that I have something fun over there.

Meanwhile, I'm happily motoring away. It is simply fantastic.

Ah, and the dog?

Mine is used daily whether I use it for work or leasure it's out at least every day or every other. Done a lot of miles in it so far and taken it to Germany and touch wood it's been nothing but a delight!

I drive an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro as my daily driver doing 20k+ miles a year, but the 944 has done 3000 miles this year including our trip to Germany and will probably do the same next year with the 964 doing nearer 1500 miles.

Both cars are now SORN'd and won't be out of the dehumidified garage until next April for the 944 and May for the 964 [:)]

as Frenchy says it's great that some of you use them every day and credit to you for doing this, but the ravages of our Winters would make me cry seeing the salt eat into my cars [:(]

Nice to read people's stories, I think daily use is a testament to there reliability and driver appeal, I still have my mk1 scirocco storm but that is garaged and not been on the road since 2007 I am a big lancia integrale fan having owned 3 and used them as daily, it really pains me to admit that although they are awesome cars the 944 gives me more driver pleasure and thatbismsaying something!

Sorry its taken so long to reply. Yes, I use my 944 Turbo S as a daily driver at the moment= don't have any option as the Mrs has changed jobs and has to have my daily beemer estate.

I've even been using the Porsche for taking my TT bike to time trials and triathlons - interesting conversation with a chap in a car park who stated " You'll never get that [TT bike with wheels on] in there...." To which I replied, was it should do as it came out !

Bear in mind the car has a half cage in as well.....

Very comfortable for a daily driver - typical mileage is ~ 60 miles a day sometimes up to 100 miles if I have to go to Kings lynn or Haverhill for the day. Taking it to Spa in October !

We have had our 924S (same as 944) for 8 years and in that time my wife has used it as her daily driver. No particular problems.

Daily driver since my XC 70 Engine seized about 4 years ago. Winter tyres a must but have left them on all this year as milage quite low 5k to 6k annually

My S2 cab is a daily and has been for the last 14 years.I've done about 165k in it and its got 235k on the clock. It's let me down twice , once with a clutch and once with the immobilizer stuck on.Original engine and box and changed the head gasket last year , which as far as I can tell was the first time the head has been off.I have a set of winter wheels and tyres that do make a serious difference , but they wont bend the laws of physics!!

I drive a T5 VW Van as my daily for work and a 1970 Mercedes for school runs and shopping. The 944 was really a toy car as I quite like the 944's for what they are..

So it's not used that much to be honest. It will get used more over winter as the Merc gets put away. Being a modern day classic the 944 it will suit our needs better.

But in general I have quite a few cars to choose from and if I am not driving the above I am driving the VW camper to the beach to go kitesurfing.

or any in the list below here [:-]

Used mine as my daily driver (only car) for about 5 years (around 7,000 miles per year), though I used a pedal bike for short journeys. Recently got a Suzuki Jimny as a cheap runabout and to save the 944 for "best", plus there are some things such as collecting logs that I didn't like to use the 944 for.
The Jimny does make me appreciate the 944 more when I take it out!

My 944 is 'my' only car. However a '03 focus is the family workhorse, and the commute to work is usually via pedal power.

I haven't even driven mine yet! Rolling it off the trailer just doesn't count. I can't wait to be using it every day, it'll be so much cheaper to run than my daily Discovery V8..

Mine is a daily driver and has been since I bought it in 1998. It's used in all weathers to and from work and also for collecting customers cars when at work as well as holiday road trips and the occasional track day. I used to do 20k a year in it when I first got it but now that I live 2 miles from work that has dropped to around 6k a year now.

It does everything I can ever want in a car so won't ever replace it, there's no need.

I do roughy 40k miles per year for work so tend to change my DD every 12-24 months. (The current 3 Series may go in Deceber for something more comfortable.)

Initially I used the 944t as much as possible but for the past year its been mostly weekends only.
