Cup or "Tear drop" mirrors

I have been offered a LHD set for a reasonable price. I know the bases will require to be changed but does the mirror glass also need to be changed? If so, to what? On Ebay you can buy "flat" or "convex" for about £20 a side but I am slightly confused - hence the question!

They may look good but restrict rear vision quite a lot compared with the flags.

I like convex both sides, interesting to start with but soon got used to. Dont think there are any rules, but not sure.

Correct! If you mean the Cup mirrors I have on the Cup car, they will be absolutely no good for permanent road use.

I know the visibility isn't great - I already have them on my s2.

However, I do think they are they are a great "visual" update for the car and modernise the look.

Why ever not?

They might be smaller but they are no worse than mirrors on modern cars

There`s nothing wrong with them if positioned correctly. I had genuine electric adjustable RHD fully working ones on my 944T and although not a daily driver I went on European PCGB jollys and did thousands of miles on RHD and LHD roads without any problem at all..................

...................and they look better in my view........................

.............debate [;)]

Debate,
i personally prefer flags on the 944, but the 964 which came with flags early doors look better with the later cups, i feel they are a bit too modern for the 944 along with twist wheels, which are a nice wheel on a 993 but not a 944, while we are at it i prefer the rubber spoiler on the 944 to the bridge spoiler on later cars............just my tuppence, each to thier own.

What Frenchy said. I don't personally like any more modern parts fitted to older cars, I even prefer the amber lenses over the clear. I might allow a bridge spoiler, but even that looks less "right" than the rubber one to me.

I originally had the teardrop mirrors on VJ, and they are noticably less good as "mirrors" than the square ones as they have less area. Convex glass will help a lot there, of course. They aren't that bad, though; you didn't read in 1993 of every 968 being wiped out due to the poor visibility from the mirrors! [&:]

If they are that crap surely they would be cheaper to buy ?

And we all know they are entirely the opposite of cheap.

Anyway, I'm buying them as I like them on a 944 and will just see where I stand with the "mirrors" themselves when I get them.

Cheers -

Well they look much more aerodynamic. Are they lighter? The flag mirrors weigh a tonne.

Somewhere near the end of my list is to replace the flags on the race car with some sort of lightweight 968 style mirror or 944 turbo cup mirror.

I was told an amusing anecdote that suggested one of their advantages was that they are "quieter" (generate less wind noise). I assume this goes hand in hand with reduced wind resistance.

A good point, lol!

The price is down to supply and demand. The flags are fitted to every period 911, 924 and 944 scrapped, and often sold when people change to teardrops. The teardrops are rarer and always in demand, and are also very prone to being nicked in town centres because they sell well on a certain auction site where people don't always worry about their provenance. You then need a new set, Porsche will happily sell you them at a price and the used price is kept high.

It's the one thing that really bugs me with auction sites; because they are selling you what you want you don't report dodgy-looking sellers and it's a vicious circle. It's like when we were burgled, and the police advised us to go to a couple of local car boot sales if we wanted our stuff back. []

I think if I found my stuff at a car boot sale after a break in .Then someone at said sale would have to call the police and an ambulance for the stall holder.

I agree with Paul I like the period look, flags have way better visibility aswell, maybe it's me but a standard looking car looks more pukka than a clear indicator wrong wheel special.I bet alot of cars will be reverted as the prices of our special and classic sports cars soar to dizzy heights....?
Nothing wrong with wishful thinking eh?

I've only changed the mirrors and handles on my s2 - using 968 parts. I think most people with a knowledge of the cars spot the mirrors right away but hardly anyone comments on the handles. I think you can get away with changing both without degrading the originality of the car too far.

Come to think of it I also have a clear indicator set up and forged alloys.... [:)]

Bridge spoilers are far sexier and assuming your car rolled out the factory with one then they beat the old rubbery number hands down in my opinion!

On the mirror front it's flags all the way for me, again as Mr Porsche intended!

Whenever changing bits like this, i beleive it is a good idea so the car can always be put back to original, read on a forum somewhere that a guy with a 993 got so peed off with numerous sets of cup mirrors being nicked, he fitted flags !

I got so peeved with what I called cricket bat mirrors on my 924S & 944 turbo they caught every stone chip, fly and bit of crap flying around and the top outside corner gave no visual advantage over the cups fitted to my 968 which didn't get so chipped or vibrate over bumpy roads cup mirrors way better.[:D]
