Cracked Windscreen

I have a 5" crack in the bottom of my windscreen that has just appeared. Not sure if it was while the car was in Hartech or the body shop when the stone chips were done [:(]

I have spoken to my insurance company and it is covered on my classic car policy. The question I have is this : can you still get the original Sekurit factory fit windscreens from Porsche or a glass supplier as I have been told to get it fixed and they will pay for the screen less my £100 excess.

Alternative is Autoglass are the approved repairers via the insurance company but not sure what type they will fit?

On my Turbo S the sekurit windscreen was an optional extra - something like £400 more. I have the figures somewhere. Would be astonished if you can get the same. Maybe ask Kongsodoken who he used. Beware of damage to paint, interior and a poorly seated screen at replacement time. Good luck.

Mine was done at Autoglass, and very well installed. But, they did get a well-experienced fitter in to my local branch, and wanted to do it inside. Was an original part, but be careful as some insurers have a maximum limit and people like Autoglass aren't cheap.

Oh, and the cracked windscreen is often when the bonnet struts are replaced; if the bonnet is raised a bit too high instead of compressing the new struts, it can crack the glass easily. [&o]

Porsche Bournemouth supplied a Securit screen for my '88 911 last year. Because I specified both screen and fitter, rather than using their preferred supplier, I had to pay my excess to my insurers, Heritage. I was more than happy to do that.

Sounds like racket handle has hit the screen when doing up the nuts on the window wipers.

Iv had a few new screen though insurance, just make sure u get one with imbed aerial and a green top
Tint

Been said b4 that its worth removing the a piller trims from inside the car b4 they fit the screen, 2 prevent any chance off damage

The insurer is Hagerty and they understand the costs and are happy for me to get the correct screen. As all the glass is Sekurit I want to get the same screen again.

I agree that it is probably when the bonnet was removed as Hartech also fitted new struts to the car that has caused the crack []

Bu it will be worth the £100 excess to get a brand new unmarked screen as the original has a few chips in it [;)]

As discussed yesterday Martin, I think your crack is definatly a result of the bonnet struts being fitted, I would think Hartech are well aware of the bonnet/screen issue so I would think it is more likely a result of the bodyshop taking your bonnet off when paintwork was done last week. The other possibility is its a complete co-incidence and maybe had a small hairline crack or chip that has extended when the car went out for a run.

I think it highlights the fact however to do a walk around your car whn dropping it off and picking it up to identify any marks that are there or on collection weren't there, hire companys do this so why shouldnt private individuals.

Cheers, Paul

Car booked into Autoglass next Thursday for the new screen to be fitted.

I told them it had to be a Sekurit screen and they are ordering it from Porsche tomorrow as agreed with my insurers Hagerty [:)]

Fingers crossed they don't mess things up ordering the screen then fitting it!!

Martin, INSIST that the fitter removes the A Pillar trims (3 screws i think) the top one comes out vertically,if left in place they WILL damage the trim when removing the windscreen, sounds to me that someone has damaged the original, Hey Hum new chip free screen.
Turbo S screens (Sekurit Double Laminate) are NLA i believe, they are lighter and have a etched instruction below the mirror area.

REMOVE A PILLAR TRIMS !!!

Thanks Jim, I've printed this off to hand to the windscreen installer and told him to ring you if he has any questions [:D]

Update from Porsche today : Genuine Porsche tinted screen with antenna and Top Tint is £398.00 + Vat (available in UK) and the non top tint version is available from Germany and costs an extra £34.41 + Vat [:-]

Looks like I will be getting the Top Tint one [:)]

I would remove the interior trims yourself before you take the car to get the screen fitted. Then leave them off for a couple of days after the screen has been fitted to allow the sikaflex to fix properly before you put them back on.It's just a wee thing but they do exert force on the windscreen when they are screwed in and if the bond is not fixed the windscreen could move a wee bit.
