Coolant loss- but only in Winter?

Hi all

It's been an expensive year, but a lot of big jobs getting done! From November last, I've had new power steering pipes and tank, new water pump, 4 new wheels and tyres, full service, new A/C condensers, rear pads/discs a full geo reset and new front shocks.

Between the water pump replacement (December) and service (April 2011) it seems I lost about 3l of coolant. No evidence of leaks and when the A/C condensers were done, the rads were checked and seemed OK. I couldn't afford to replace them at the time.

Over the spring and summer I lost no coolant, but in the last 4 weeks I seem to be losing some again. Topped up with 1.5l 3 weeks ago, and now needs another litre.

So, the question is- could there be an issue with the heater water circulation- it seems I only lose coolant when the heater needs to be on (Dec to April and now September to November)? Or is it just coincidence?

I'd love that to be the answer, but suspect 2-3 litres to be too much for expansion/contraction :)

There is obviously something amiss. I don't think I ever put any coolant in either of my 996's in all the time I owned them. I have a bottle of coolant for top ups, but the cap is still sealed.

Apart from the old favourites like rads, coolant tank, and tank cap (all of which would show drips on the garage floor) I can't think of anything common. Perhaps a simple system pressure check might give you a clue.

Thanks Richard.

I don't have a garage- I park on a gravel drive so looking for drips is difficult, but even when parked on harder surfaces overnight there are no obvious drips.

A pressure test might be a good idea!
