Coolant level

Thought I'd just get people to see where their coolant level sits when the car is cold.
Mine insists on being just under minimum. You can't quite see fluid from the top but from the front it is just under the top of the reservoir. I've topped it up a couple of times and it drops back to here but not lower.
When warm it is between halfway and max.
The system has been pressure checked and I don't think there is a leak - I suppose it could be in the reservoir at the top joint?
Anyway where's yours!
 
Mine sits about half an inch above minimum - like yours if I top it up it just settles back to it's normal level, has done for years with no problems. My wife's previous car (2004 Celica) had a 'sealed for life' coolant tank & when cold the header tank would regularly appear completely empty. Despite it clearly having min & max levels on the side Toyota said it was completely normal & the car never did have a problem.

Often the more disconcerting sign from the 944 cooling system (that is again apparently normal) is for the temp gauge to move around quite a bit. From four years of ownership & no actual overheating problems but a healthy dose of paranoia (is that oil I can smell? is it my car or the car in front etc) the thermostat starts to open just above the first line & normal running temp (thermostat open but fan not on) is just below the second line so the gauge sweep is registering a smaller variance than 'normal' cars do.

As RS says a healthy dose of paranoia always helps!
It is just one of those odd things that different individual cars do different things. My old S sat quite happily between min and max when cold, this one doesn't.
My wife's old Impreza sat below min yet the new one sits towards max. Go figure!
The comment from RS about where the temp gauge sits is another odd thing. Some seem to sit on the bottom line at 80. Others sit mid way between the lines so about 90.
Always thought it odd that slightly older cars show some variance on the temp gauge yet newer ones get to normal and stay put. You can hear the fans cycle in and out but there is never a twitch on the gauge. I'm not sure which I prefer - watching the movement with the mantra its fine its fine thats what it does or knowing it never moves but wondering how warm it gets!
 
Id simply like to be able to see the level through the discoloured header tank to be honest. I have no idea of the level apart from the fact that i can just see the coolent close to the filler when i take the cap off when its warm.

How much would a new header tank be from an OPC? A new one would brighten up the engine bay no end.
 
They are not that much. Off the top of my head it's around £40.

(they only stay super white for a few years though [&o] mine is starting to discolour now)
