Conversion to electronic speedo

Having recently changed gearbox to a newer version with an electronic pickup rather than the old style cable from the front wheels, I wondered if anyone had ever converted a square dash speedo to make use of the electronic pickup ? Main reason being, my speedo needle bounches up and down like a yo-yo until I reach about 40mph, and even then seems to over-read by around 10mph across the range.

I have tried changing the routing of the cable to no avail (I believe this is usually caused by the inner cable whipping around inside the outer sleeve) and suspect I will have to fit a new cable, so wondered if I could change to electronic instead ?

Doubt that it's easily done, but no harm in asking [:)]

Cheers

NB. the next issue of GT Porsche will hopefully have a nice article comparing an early 944 (which may look familiar) to a late model S2....... keep your eyes peeled !

Its the opposite of easy. sorry. Its a massive job and while I have seen it done, it involves a massive amount of work.

Is the speedo cable flapping around somewhere, maybe its adding to your 'bouncy needle' try securing it but not too tight.

It's not as difficult as it might seem . The electronic speedo is self contained and only needs power and signal from the sensor on the gearbox.
It hasn't been done before but someone is undergoing this project ,look here http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=37189&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

It is however much easier to just change your cable.

Making a later speedo work from a hall effect sensor isnt difficult, but fitting the oval dashboard to house it is.

No need for that ,the late speedo fits pretty nicely in the early housing , check the link i posted and you will see .

I hadnt seen that, and I havent ever seen that before! I have made an early (actually 924S as I wanted white printing) speedometer fit into a later dashboard though...

I found that my needle started bouncing at low speeds. Replacing the inner cable cured the problem. Probably easier than changing from mechanical to electronic.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone for your responses, and apologies for the tardy reply ! Think I shall head down the far simpler route of a new speedo cable.......

Cheers
