Considering buying a 996

Is there anything I ought to know about them.....quirks etc, or any reason not to buy one?! Can' t think of any right now, but I thought I' d ask!

It' s a C2 Cab with PCM allypack etc

All comments gratefully received before I place the order!

No reason not to buy it - does everything better than the alternatives and rewards skilful driving. Easier to be specific if you tell us how you will use it....daily driver, weekend jaunts, track car, female attractor etc. PS - PCM well worth having.

At the risk of having rotten egg' s thrown in my general direction, have you test drove the BoxterS, 996 Cab is a great car, but if I wanted a soft top the BoxterS would get my vote, not quite as quick or " macho" but sounds & handles better plus saves a big wedge of the green stuff ! Just a thought, if you still want the 996, put 18 inch wheels, a sound upgrade(plus a few alloy bits to lift the cabin) & a sports exhaust (Pre01 facelift) on your wish list. Let us know how you get on.

Would agree - I went from a Boxster 2.7 to a 996 C2Cab and, whilst the C2 is noticably faster, there is no doubt the Boxster handled much sweeter. Given the choice, a Boxster with C2 performance (an S nearly gets there, I understand) would be tops!

I needed the rear seats so a C2 cab is, for me, ok. Only 13 years to go before the girls go to Uni / leave home !!!

Hi

I am new to this club. I too am looking to buy a 996. However I spoke to a reputable car tuner who deals with Porsche' s and he told me that the early 1997/98 models had some design quirks and not as well put together then the newer models.

Can anyone confirm this or is it just a folk tale.

Also I am thinking that if the new 911 comes out next summer wont prices drop a fair amount too?

Sorry so many questions - so much to learn....

thanks

Possibly they may fall a little, like a few per cent, but it won' t be widespread carnage, IMHO.
My understanding is that nearly new C2' s are under a little pressure at the moment, so maybe the depreciation effect is already starting to be factored in.
Certain variants will still be more sought after though.

Regardless of your views on the front lights, there is not much wrong with the rest of the 996, and the 997 exterior is only going to be subtly different (aside from the likely return to 993 style front lights.)

Thanks Stuart... I am actually not too fond of the new 911 spy shots. It seems to be a step back in design terms. Also with the baby bently and aston coming out for similiar money and eventually the gorgeous Audi Nuveralli the competition is going to be tough.

Maybe the rumoured appearance in Bad Boys 2 of the new Porsche might help [:)]

Jonathan, no reason not to buy, we have 996 C2, not a cab, but its a fantastic car. We have had it a year now and neither hubby or I have any desire to change it yet! except maybe for a 996 Targa if the right one came along.
Follow your instincts there generally right.[:)]
