Considering a 981 S Cayman - my first post

Good evening all
I am new to the Club, but not to Porsche. I am thinking about a 981 Cayman S (instead of a standard 991.1 - even if I could find one) for up to £40K. Is sports chrono essential? Is manual a better experience to PDK? Is living with a dark colour easy or not (I had someone drive into my basalt black 987 Boxster)? Has anyone with a dark coloured car wrapped the door mirrors, and or elsewhere with a bright colour? I know much of this is subjective, but I value your insights. I hope my first post is permissible. I had a white 2013 CS PDK for three years - 20,000 miles, no sport chrono, manual AC, sports exhaust ... absolutely superb

I prefer light colours, by coincidence all my three (used approved) Caymans` have been white

My other two Caymans` were / are manuals, it took me a while to get used to the GT4 after the CS`s PDK but now consider that they had / have the right gearbox for their respective talents

On the CS I would happily do without the sports exhaust, it droned far more than that in the GT4 plus the pops & bangs are tiresome. I used to run with it deselected most of the time, especially when in Sports Plus ... the engine - exhaust note in this mode was excellent

Another option to be aware of is the PASM - 20mm vs. -10mm, I was happy with my -20mm set up. I ran the car`s geometry set to parallel front toe - max. negative camber front & rear - slight toe in at the rear

I have a rhodium silver one with two tone beige/black interior, Pdk, sport chrono, auto a/c, Pasm, bose, folding mirrors, auto wipers, 14way electric seats, Pdls, almost new n rated tyres and under 25k miles if it's of interest

 
In my view sports chrono isn’t essential

but desirable. The experience becomes that much more visceral.

I don’t subscribe to the view that manual is a better overall experience to PDK. Manual 2nd gear is too long and frustrated my fun. PDK took a little relearning to get the hang of paddle shifting in many conditions including extremis, and I enjoy the drive more than manual.

I‘m not a fan of met basalt black, but the car I wanted was in this colour.

Can’t comment on mirrors.

Wise choice of model! I would have thought most will have Sport Chrono and that it won’t make much difference to the price, however “essential”? - very much a matter of personal preference. I have to say that I rarely use the Sport settings on my GTS as I don’t notice much difference. I can think of another member who virtually never switches it off.

Manual or pdk? There has been a lot of discussion about this previously on the forum. Judging by sales, I think about two thirds are pdk, but someone more knowledgeable than me can confirm. Personally, I would not thank you for a manual on my daily drive - but would never want to swap the manual box on the Cayman for pdk!

I had a graphite base C981 previously with no issues but can’t help further than that.

I had a 981CS for nearly 6 years, fully loaded with PDK, PASM (only drops height by 10mm on 981's), chrono, PTV, sports plus seats (an essential after first driving one with them), Bose, plus more.

Great car and the one I miss most (also owned 3 911's). Can't comment on the manual as never drove one after testing a PDK, but the general criticism is the long gearing (bit shorter with PDK).

Sport does make a big difference to both throttle and gearbox settings, however I only ever used sports+ with gearbox in manual as it's really for track driving if left in auto mode. PASM I thought excellent, particularly with 20" wheels.

Try both gearboxes if you can. They are a great touring car having done a number of euro tours in ours.

Mine was Agate grey, have also owned many other dark cars and never been run into! I'd worry more about spec than colour.
