confessions of a 944 bodger

ok this is an idea generated by Sandpiper in the other confession thread.

What are the best/worse bodges you have made on your 944 ?

Mine are
1. Elastic bands to hold the windscreen actuating arm onto the ball joint ![:D]
2. Poking oil and grease mix into the cills to temporaily halt the rust . (well it was 18 months ago lol but it killed the rust dead)

Heres a couple for Paul the previous owner who really is a champion bodger and an out and out fibber to boot!

1. rear hatch switch held in with duct tape.
2. Cassette armrest cover held on with duct tape
3. Glued the dash light thumb switch into the dash with superglue.

 
1. Gaffer tape painted body colour to cover 3 inch hole in sill while waiting for weather decent enough to weld it.

2. Successfully re-using a head gasket to keeep the car running till I could get a new one.

And probably some others I cant remember involving super glue and gaffer tape
 
Spray WD40 into my alternator bearing followed by a desperate attempt with motorcycle chain lube.

I now have chain lube everywhere and the worlds noisiest bearing which has caused depression to set in.[&:]

1. I too have repaired the cassette armrest with duct tape. You dont see the tape and it works perfectly.
2. The rear drivers side drain pipe from the sunroof was blocked. I found that the pipe had kinked about 4" above the join with the pipe from the fuel filler. It wouldn't stay straight on its own so I passed it through a length of hosepipe.
3. Rubber bands on the wiper mechanism (previous bodge) kept breaking so I cut a piece of aluminium sheet in the shape of an "H" and wrapped it round the arm and both sides of the joint.
 
+1 for the superglue trick except for the wiper adjust rheostat
Repaired indicator self cancel with bits of cable tie and said same superglue
Repaired sun roof cable drive mechanism with some tin can and 2 x jubilee clips
All I can think of for now
 
I can honestly say i've never bodged anything on the Porker. There's a plethora of electrical wiring sins already lowering the tone but none of them are mine. Someone has had a love affair with those wretched scotchlok things at some point- solder and heat shrink all the way for me.

Incidentally, i don't consider the oil/grease mix a sin in fact i swear by it, but we all have our own preferences. Unlike waxoyl it doesn't form a skin for the rust to quietly carry on beneath, downside is you have to keep reapplying.

exactly ! but you try convince a Waxoyl user [:(] Oil creeps along rusty metal excluding oxygen

Erm, I can honestly say I an struggling to think of any botches on the 944. I have done some, but always temporarily, and sorted them out properly later on.

OK here's one; repaired the engine bay undertray with some aliminium strip and pop rivets to bridge a crack. And it's such a good botch that I'm going to leave it like that! [:D]

1: Windscreen washer pump fixed to reservoir with duct tape after buying the wrong one off E-Bay.
2: Roof lining held on with duct tape where it meets the rear hatch (quite proud of that one as you cant see it unless the hatch is fully open [:D] )

The old girls not doing too badly really.

When I got my my 944 the bodgers had been at work.

1. Headlight alignment by a very hit and miss arrangement of a bolt and numerous nuts.

2. Middle silencer replaced by a section of pipe.

3. Instrument panel bulbs removed from the ABS and 'big' warning lights
and some others replaced by 'tank' tape to cover up inoperative ABS pump.

4. Small battery unrestrained - too short to reach retaining clips.

5. Fuel filter with no retaining mount.

These are all fixed now.

Bodges I have used are:-

Rivnuts to replace rusted bolts in indicator and bumper mounted light units

Superglue to retain emergency flasher switch

Long brass nut in differential filler plug to allow me to remove it to refil with oil.

Likewise, in three separate places around the dash and roof lining "¦ but leftover Dynamat (sound deadening sheets for speaker installs) instead of Transit rubber.

Duct tape instead of the fancy Porsche plastic film inside the doors to keep everything covered up in there.

The rear brake back plates got rusty. Instead of replacing them I just took them off. It's weight saving, right?

I did that too! And on the front as well.

Weight saving, but unsprung weight saving as well! [;)]

Only attempted one bodge on the 944, the rear bumper trim has come off the fastner at one end, an attempt was made to "glue" this in back in place but it failed.

On my 911 someone bodged brilliantly by glueing the number plate lights in place/back together. When I got new ones I found it why, the metal into which the nuts go was rusted away, a similar bodge has now been effected until I can do it properly.
 
+1 on the Windscreen wiper arm & elastic band
tape holding the roof lining on after sorting the sunroof drain pipes
had to drill out exhaust hanger after welded in bolt snapped and use an ordinary nut & bolt
 
On the rear hatch where the hatch and glass meet,I had a decal made to cover it up from the outside,cheap and looks fine.
 
Very old style wiper on the rear with steel pin of various diameters connecting arm to blade - original went AWOL so a stainless bolt was converted - very happy with result - 2 years or so now.

Since getting my porsche the water cap has been replaced by a coffee jar lid!.....been meaning to replce it for the last year but it seems to be doing the job and fits perfectly, kinda adds character,

thats a neat solution ! Care to tell us what make of coffee ? then we can add it to the list of 'alternative parts ' lol[;)]
