cone air filters.

Standard airbox is better for smooth airflow & power by a country mile on a lux, the standard airbox is very well designed. Cone filter will sound nicer though.

I agree. An airbox is always best. It protects the incoming air from the heat of the engine bay and settles the air so you get nice laminar airflow entering the intake, instead of swirling turbulent air which means lots of losses. Often the restriction comes on the means to get air into the airbox. However with a stock AFM you are best with an airbox, if you upgraded to MAF or MAP then the airbox pipework might become the restriction.

I currently have a cone filter on mine, not through choice but because I have no afm and havn't modded the airbox yet and the intake temps reach 100 degrees f in traffic and performance does suffer, didn't drive it today but it would probably been horrific.
Also I'm getting manifold pressure spikes since the filter went on so Scott is probably correct. It does sound good though and pick up over 4k is better.
The intake temperature does drop to ambient at speed but I don't trust the filtering properties of a cone filter so it won't be on my car for long.

Done many tests with the induction kits v the air box when I had my 360BHP Saab 9000 Aero..

Long story short - the results are the best when you have an air box with a *new* high flow rate panel filter in. Cone filters are great when the engine bay temp is low - but in traffic or in a heavy run they actually can have a negative effect.

Also, the fact that you dont replace them - no matter how much you clean them, you will never get the flow rate from a used cone filter than you do when you first put it on, that is actually also the case with the re-usable panel filters...

To that effect - I ran a standard (saab at the time) panel filter and just threw it away every 6k... easy...

I thought the cone would sound better, I have a KN in the airbox at the moment, but I hoped somebody would say there was a bonus to the cone other than the sound in everyday useage. If it is not an advantage up to 4k revs for everyday traffic then I'm better off as I am. Thanks for the input.
