Condenser.........again!

Went to see my mate for a re-gas tonight and a pressure test revealed a pin hole leak in the condenser. That's the 3rd one I've went through in 50k miles. It has next to no chance of a long life where it sits on the car but ces't la vie!

Part numbers I've found are:
944 573 011 05
AC239000P
4057635019972
70.362.26.805

Can get a Mahle one on ebay for £261.

He has plenty stock, lots of places charging £350+ with no stock it seems.

As ever, I'm on a budget. Does anyone happen to have a serviceable unit, or a new one planked away, that they could help me out with?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

I haven't had a working radio or aircon in my turbo for the last 17 years. That's not because I'm tighter than a Ducks arse, I just like listening to the noisy exhaust with the window open😆.

Do the same myself! As this is my daily it's quite handy to have the a/c working all year round.

Also, if anyone has removed their A/C, I could do with the hose that goes from the compressor to the larger condenser input. My captive nut is in bad shape and may be the issue. Be worth trying a new pipe.

Took a punt on a used one from Poland for 50 euros. It may or may not work but it comes with the hose I need which means if it works its a brucie bonus. There is also a chance my problem may be said hose as the nut is chewed with bits missing although it did hold pressure like that for a year or so. Anyway, see what turns up and I can have a potter about.

I saw something (possibly on rennlist) where they were modifying a much cheaper "universal" condensor by cutting up an old 944 condensor and attaching the brackets so it could be mounted in the same place.

Interesting but looks like hard work. I'll see how my 2 new 2nd hand OEM items fair up and make a plan from there!

I hope my new one lasts, probably won't be getting it charged up until next year now it is getting cooler. Still need to attach my adapters to the hardlines to convert it to the new hose connectors.

Yeah the factory lines have very odd connectors on them, thankfully I have a replacement line for the my one with a bad captive nut (compressor to condenser line). Probably be spring before I think about it, road trip up north of Scotland next week with rain showers and a balmy 16 degrees to look forward too! I'll cope without my AC!

As for your condenser lasting, it probably won't last more than 20k miles, its in a terrible place. I wish you all the best with it though! I've got condenser number 4 currently in a box. Original was goosed when I got the car, and in the 5 or 6 years I've had it working, 2 more more have bit the dust. Although this time it may be the refrigerant line, you never know!

I would suggest getting some mesh grill in the bumper holes, shouldn't hurt cooling too much and could save the condenser from the worst of the crap it tries to ingest.
