Cold weather question

My 2.7 never likes turning over/starting when cold. When its warm it spins over no problem.

Is this due to the fact the cylinders are large (for a 4 pot)?

Or is my starter just getting old?

Its a mixture of things, exacerbated by the large cylinders. Firstly battery's hate cold weather, let it go flat during sub zero temps and your likely to kill it, or at least make it never the same again. I take mine out when it gets really cold and put it on a trickle charger, keeps it nice and healthy. My starter motor sometimes hesitates (pauses momentarily) when starting so probably needs replacing at some point too. Add to the fact that each cylinder has a lot a cc for a 4 pot and things get sluggish.

If you've got a thick oil that won't help either. I've moved from 20w50 to 10w40 which seems to help with my cold starting.
 
Check your earths.

Run a jump start lead from each earth point (including from the starter itself) direct to the battery earth and you`ll soon see the difference and find any issues.
 
Make sure you have a reasonably new, in good fettle battery and whilst you're looking at the battery find out what its "Cold Cranking Amps" rating is; not all batteries are created equal. My Bosch S5 007 (biggest battery I could get to fit in the S2s battery tray) has 750 CCA for reference.
