Ian, I would remove the large inspection cover on the gearbox and see if there is any rotational movement in the torque tube shaft. Check to make sure the bolts are tight as well as a loose coupling will destroy the torque tube shaft and the gearbox input shaft as well. If there is any rotational movement at all, your clutch centre has failed. Judder could also be contamination, is your crank seal leaking at all? Alasdair

Hi,
Would like some feedback and advice if possible from the knowledgeable out there. Here is the problem. When car cold and normal running temps clutch behaves quite smoothly in all situations. However, once the car gets in traffic or after a bit of a blast and temps are obviously up. When you change down from fourth to third really big juddering from clutch as it bites. You can control it by slipping, doesn't do it in any other gear while changing down. Also once the car is nice and hot I sometimes get juddering pulling off in 1st but again can control it -just.
I was going to do this
1. change clutch fluid
2. give a bit more play in the clutch pedal (read recently this worked, not sure why)
3. using "Clarks garage" method recondition the air flow meter arm to hopefully ensure that the fueling ratio are spot and smooth, therefore ensure car running at optimum. ( I am thinking this as its 90k old and may be adding add something to the mix. I sometimes get a bit of hunting on the throttle when super hot so am probably going to do that anyway.I cant see any air leaks in the pipes which are in good condition)
4. Last resort change clutch (car done 90K) but not top of my list as clutch performs very well in all other aspects. I have read about the rubber doughnut causing problems though if this was the case I would expect problems across the gears and shunting when coming off the power which I don't get as car quite smooth.
So any bright suggestions

Hi Ian I suspect that this could be the clutch, not necessarily the friction pad itself but perhaps the springs within the clutch. I had this myself in the past, the pad still had some meat in it but the springs had failed. I drove it for a while with the judder until that is it developed a horrible screaming noise which was caused by the inner springs falling out and binding. Of course this is for a turbo, not sure what the clutch is on an S2. Pete
If it has the original rubber centred clutch you can take the inspection gromet off the bellhousing and look / feel for small pieces of rubber.
