When I was a member and had my 944T I was absolutely staggered to see brand new cars in the concours section.
I knew immediately that this was a car I liked and then noted the club similarity to the 1960`s John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett "I look down on him" sketch
The aircooled 911`s look down on the water cooled and the watercooled 911's look down on the 968`s and the 968`s look down on the 944`s and 944`s look down on the 924`s..........................
Never bothered with membership after that and still stick to my local car club - The Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club from Southdown in Harpenden where no-one cares what it is or what condition and we have holidays runs and weekend breaks with none of the snottiness. (We started/created the famous Classics on the Common [
])
Mind you the 944 lot and the region we were in were smashing people (and still are) which is why I still hang around here [

I'm a member because my road car is 993, but it is very Cliquey , they send me notices of the meetings the day before, ie this morning I got a newsletter telling me my local group meeting is tomorrow.
Now they must have booked that weeks ago, so why not tell people in advance so they can make arrangements.......?
Must be something I said.....

I've never found that, or I'm too thick to notice, and I do go to "National" stuff. Although there was a lady of eastern origin who was fine the first time I met her but not when I was with my (Black) wife.
Local group are great and always have been.

Hi Paul - I'll be at the Classics on the Common this year, my sisters triumph Herald was in the first ever show and I used to go to the Carpenters when I had a Spitfire 20 odd years ago, I moved away from Harpenden about 13 years ago but will look out for you when I am there, will you be showing a car?ORIGINAL: Hilux

That is surprising, but I would imagine that like most Regions the monthly meets are on the same day each month so they probably didn't see it as short notice. Clearly if events are being arranged and "others" are only told at the last minute that isn't good enough.
I think that the local meetings can seem quite cliquery purely because they are a group of people who have known each other for quite a while and it can be hard for new people to join the group. This is a common complaint up and down the country and I still haven't worked out what the answer is.
I also know from my own experiences as an RO that I have a busy work and home life and sometimes it is hard to slot in the sending of emails etc in a completely timely fashion.

Consider yourself lucky, I've never heard a peep out of my Regional Organiser or anything region-related from PCGB central despite attempts on my part to kick things off. The 944 Register and this section of the forum is my sole reason for sticking around. That's an aside, though.
I saw the bickering going on in the "Members Only" area and I can't say I am surprised. Disappointed, yes; but not surprised. It is a shame that all concerned couldn't find something more entertaining to do on a bank holiday weekend than play car-club politics. I had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend out in the old 944 visiting both Snetterton and Castle Combe circuits. Perhaps they should try getting out more too?
I have found everyone in the region to be very welcoming and not judgemental at all.I go along to the monthly meetings fairly regularly and have always had a good warm reception, our RO always emails well in advance of any events and is very aproachable and chatty.Every one I have met in the club up here so far has been spot on and always interested in what your car and what you are doing to it.We don't have any of the snobbery that seem s to blight the rest of the country.

Hi Joss
We started with about 30 cars one June eons ago, next year were about 90 cars then 200. It got big and we didnt have the time but Peter Madden (Rover P5OC) and John Tibble (Carpenters Arms Landlord) then kept it going for years until the year before last and the Round Table now run it. It is the second biggest show of classic cars in Europe bettered only by Essen but its only for one Wednesday evening and so many cars mean you need to be there early.
To answer truthfully Joss I dont show a car any more, I work in London so get back to my station (Harpenden) and meet some mates (and Peter and John) and have a few beers and watch the cars and the coming and going of up to I was told 10,000 people and over 1500 cars
Great show - rare cars of all sorts, love it.
The Beds and Cambs region was superb, regular meets in either county, many runs and Eurpoean trips organised by Bev and Daryll - fond memories.
Been pleasantly surprised how people with more modern porsches have made the effort to come over and say how the 944T was the best car they ever owned and have a good chat. the big club events can seem a bit cliquey in fact some 944 events end up a little like that as some of us know each other well it can be daunting for the newer members. I think maybe we should have avatar name badges at events as some of us know each other - but don't!
Havent been to a local meet for ages as never seem to get the time anymore but being a club member does help to provide the forum. Whilst there is some politics at the top there are enough good people around to keep it honest and drive it forward in the members interest, we need to back them and support as required. There is a desire for openness and a back to basics approach.

One can always use their own name on forums! [
Tony (or 944 Turbo), is right that there are always politics at the top of any huge organisation, but that's only to be expected. If you don't want the politics you have to stay very small, and can't offer the same benefits. Of course, you also stay cheaper as well, so it's all a trade-off. Usually the politics don't affect the thousands of ordinary members, but recently it's become apparant that continued mismanagement might filter down to our Register and events. That's why we are keeping the Directors on their toes at each other, and there's nothing wrong with battling our own little corner. [
Personally, the discounts I get make PCGB membership free so cost isn't relevant, but I joined in order to get more from owning the car by sharing the experience with like-minded people. Titanic offered that, for a while, but to me Club membership is about stepping out from behind the keyboard and actually meeting people. If you've not tried it, we are a friendly bunch and 944 gatherings are always worth the trip, Club member or not.
