clonking noise on backlash ??

ORIGINAL: Jinxy

Hi Oli, yes Ben at Faze1 Motorsport races 944's & is also a parts supplier, he's been a big help since ive owned the car even though ive not spent a penny with him, which goes a long way with me, some people on here know him & his racing others dont, but hes a decent guy who knows the Marque well, hes got his workshop in Hoddesdon, Herts & fortunately its a 2 minute drive from my home so thats less for me to worry about... he makes decent coffee too LOL !!.
Ah, OK. That's good. As long as he knows the model it's a good thing.

Keep us updated with your story.

Oli.

Yes will do Oli, just hoping i can get it all sorted by next week, hate being without any of my cars, cheers again, Jinxy

Looks like i may have got off lightly after all, turns out the gearbox mounting has come away & twising against the drive shafts !!, mind you gearbox mountings dont come cheap, £158 available from Porsche only !!!, being done Monday, so hopefully be able to make the Ace Cafe meet after all !!.

you just reminded me that I still have the original mount on my car, must change that state of affairs before getting the car back on the road.

good to hear it's not the clutch then, let's hope not...:)

Pete

cheers Pete, Oli, Ive got everything crossed thats its just the mount, wont know for sure until its all together, but lets say im sleeping a little sounder tonight based on what we found today, its still going to cost me a few hundered quid to get fixed, but thats much better than first feared, Bens also going to check out my drive shafts while he's under there along with the rest of the drive train & also adjust my handbrake while he's at it, so i know its going to be in very safe hands. Jinxy

ok, so i counted my chickens before they hatched..... turns out the problem is not only a knackered gearbox mount, but also the clutch needs replacing after all..... along with a set of parking brake pads.....DAMMIT !!![:(]... oh well its got to be done, so being done next week, will let you all know how it went, Jinxy

May I refer my learned (new) friend Mr Jinky to this thread;

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=711394

It was started by the erstwhile Mr McNulters, and relates to bills for work and the size of them ...

Oli.

OMG Oli !!.. i dont feel too bad now, i know its gonna cost a few quid, but most of that post is Telephone number money !!... with bills like that i better get used to wielding my own spanners in the future instead of being lazy & whinging that ive got no time to do it myself LOL !!, Jinxy

If its a series two car ('86MY onwards) then you can buy third party mounts, or even weld up your own - itll be harsher of course, but its a common prep tweek.

If its a series one car then Id be looking at a used good mount from a dismantler, because itll be a fraction of the price and its not a common failure.

Simon

cheers Simon, its a 2.7 1989, i did look at the welded type mounts, but didnt know the downsides ( if any ) of having it on the car & what effect it would have on any other standard type fittings that are on the car, so just plumbed for buying an original from OPC. Jinxy

You can buy a solid mount for a series two for about £30> IIRC, but EMC would just weld-up solid the OEM mount. The result is increased harshness, but Im not sure how bad it would be - probably too much for a 100% road car though.

Just an update really, the cars in the workshop, zorst is off, gearbox out, torque tube out, clutch off & indeed the clutch is in a bad shape, the doughnut has shattered right around the base, it looks as though the rubber has become vulcanised due to heat & age & just separated, allowing it to slide back & forth against the stops, which explains the backlash you get when it parts company, its looks to be the original clutch, so 124k miles really isnt that bad, will post some pics of the offending clutch when i get the car back, as it may serve to help others understand the symptoms if this happens to them. Just waiting for the new clutch & gearbox mount to arrive by courier & the car should be back by tomorrow if im lucky. Jinxy
