Clocking - can it be detected

Hi all! I am about to buy a 996 C2 and since my last porsche experience is about 10 years old, I was wondering if there is a way to determine the real miles/kms a car has. Is a Porsche dealer able to tell you or there are ways to clock the car that cannot be detected (eg BMW cars can be clocked in ways that cannot be detected).

Unfortunately clocking of German imports here in Greece is very common practice, and I want to know what I am paying for.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

check against the service history on the car and the actual parts on the car

sometimes a good check will reveal excessive wear on parts where there should not be for that mileage.

ie more brakes and pads, few clutches, maybe a gear box. but then it can all be replaced and looks as new!!

but to be honest there is no way of knowing really.

The DME records the operating hours in its memory. If you can get a readout with a PST2 you can get a vague idea of whether the milage is way out, but there is no degree of accuracy.

If you can't get access to a PST2 or PIWIS, then there is some diagnostic software from Durametric which will display this information. See www.durametric.com . Cost is about 200USD.

Is the DME record of operating hours a safe way to check though? I mean, if someone can change the digital reading for the miles/kms then why wouldn't they be able to change the operating hours so they match?

As far as I know the operating hours can't be changed. I don't think the hacking software that can change the mileage is capable of this. Do a google search for "car mileage correction" and then one for "car operating hours correction". You'll see the difference. You can buy the mileage correction software for about £4 - which is worrying - and it includes software to retreive radio codes as well!

According to the man in charge of service in my local porsche dealership, clocking cannot be detected. It is a shame that they cannot do something about this!

You can stop the miles going onto the speedometer by taking the fuse out in some models as I found when I blew a fuse fitting a stereo.

However I am told that regardless of this the ECU unit records the miles and your OPC can plug in and see if this is correct against the speedo
