Clear tube Engine Mod

Guest

New member
When I was up with Paul Scutt last week looking in his engine bay he pointed out a coupe of clear tubes plumbed into a big fat black plastic tube going top to bottom which he suggested was a must have mod (you can tell I'm technial now can't you)

Looking at other engine bay shots its there on some cars and not on others. I've attached an example (to big to embed)

Paul/Anyone can you confirm what it is?

thx

Paul,

Firstly thanks for meeting me. Our chat reminding me of tank slappers at Oulton really took me back......also maybe we should get some bike racks for the cars and ride track day circuits?

Thanks also for the info on the engine mods.....as I say i've seen it on a couple of RS engines and can't remember if its in mine to be.....and thanks for the feedback from Mr Mint on the Strasse car....always good to have insight.

See ya soon.

this is a mod which cools the drive belts in the distributor's..
They can overheat and break.

I had heard that it there to prevent a build up of gasses via an air bleed - enabled by the fresh air inlet to the heater. The effect is the same though - to prevent the drive belt from disintegrating early.

Yeah, I had heard it's to prevent ozone build up. The ozone rots the belts, which causes them to snap. All 964s should have had it done by now, or they risk dizzy belt failure. If it fails you may be lucky and no damage results. If the 'free' dizzy stops with the contacts touching, well, imagine a permanent live HT feed to the plug!!! Meant to be nasty.[]

Its a 993 part that 964s have now been adding for peace of mind.
Its a dizzie vent kit to remove the ozone caused by the sparks in the dizzies from the ignition these eat the oxygen and supposedly rots the belt.
Its a £7 part available form all OPCs and varios online P suppliers, comes with all the fittings, the other tube you may see fitted is the vent to keep the rear reflector clear off dampness
See JMs http://www.porsche964.co.uk/ technical / engine and transmission / Broken Distributor Belts and Ventilation Kits for further explanations [;)]

Hi. Any one had this done by someone they can recomend? Parts seem cheap, what is the cost for a fully installed kit. Many thanks.

I did mine myself, it took about 15 minutes, alternatively look at the link above and do the easy option http://www.porsche964.co.uk/technical/images/vent/Dscf3679aaaa.jpg

"Refitting the air pipe is quite a hassle, especially getting the bottom jubilee clips on. Elliott avoided drilling a hole in the pipe by connecting the vent hose into the rear light cluster vent hose using a T-Piece. These are the same T's used to join screen wash hoses. Click the photo for a blow-up view. Looks good to me!"

This pic was me that done this initially, its the easiest option as all you need is a stanley knife to split the current reflector tube and a T piece to add the new tube too, i then did it as it should have been done, it isnt really any hastle at all [;)] for anybody that is reasonably competent

Thanks Elliot

I think the jury is still out on whether I am reasonably competent!!! So I may way until the car goes in for a service or some work and get them to do it then ........ unless you have 15 minutes spare!!! Would love to have a go at some of these smaller jobs but I need to see them done first or have some one keep an eye on me in case I cock it up.

Regards
