Cleaning wheels?

Opinions please on a wheel cleaner.

I have always used Wonder Wheels but it struggles with the brake dust residue from the Porterfied pads fitted to my car.

Ultimately it is going to mean a change in brake pads as the combination of squeal and the huge amounts of extreemly sticky brake dust is too much of a pain.

TIA

BTW this illustrates one of the failures of the forum model based sections, all Porsches have wheels, require cleaning etc. but where do you post messages on general items.

Hi Robbie
Sorry, I' ve not got any advise about wheel cleaners. but I can' t help noticing the similarity between your picture and John Simm' s picture.
Were they by any chance taken on the same day, at the same venue?

I use Autoglym alloy wheel cleaner on my wife' s OZ Superturismos but just soapy water and WD40 on my Fuchs. I tried a wheel cleaner but it does funny things to the annodizing.

Nicola,

Yes, we had a between Christmas and New Year outing to Goodwood. There were three of us in all, one white and two black 944 Turbos. We arranged it via the Titanic forum. The idea was to take some photos and then have some lunch in the excellent Cadillac Cafe at the circuit. That was closed so " Don' t worry" I said " We can go to the flying club" , that was closed too so we ended up in a pub where the food was a bit suspect but of course the company was excellent.

re. your signature, have you heard of this one:

That' s why it' s called " The Present"

I' ve not used it myself but, whilst running the risk of sounding like a rep for Incero, members of Essex region who bought Incero wheel cleaner (following Peters presentation at our monthly meeting) have spoken highly of the product.

Do I get a special discount now please Peter[:)]

Region 10 had a demo from a wheel refurbishing company a few years ago and they maintained that ALL specialist wheel cleaning products contain harsh additives that will accelerate the wear of your wheels finish.

They recommended the safest thing is car shampoo, warm water, elbow grease and wash them regularly before the dust gets a chance to get ingrained. If you do use specialist wheel cleaners because they are much easier and faster they recommended rinsing immediately with lots of water, or you' ll be calling them sometime soon for a repaint [:D]

I think that was good advice a few years ago when cleaners were either strong acid or strong alkaline bases but technology has moved on. The wheel cleaner we use is safe on all wheels. The source of the formulation is found in a completely different market from the traditional alloy cleaner market. It draws on technology used in catering cleaners not wheel cleaners to deilver a safe yet effective formulation.

In its original supplied form it has an Alcan certification for safe use on Aluminium and in that form has been tested by Bentley Motors for use on its chromed alloys. We reguarly leave it for several hours on our wheels as a demonstration without any ill effects - it is also safe on hands and skin. The products has no warnings for extended use or immediate removal.

I agree that there are many of the old style cleaners still being marketed but there are a number that have moved on and deserve a closer look.

Excellent news [:D]

Thanks for the info Peter, I think you may be getting a call because though I advocate the use of warm water and suds I am basically lazy and will pay for a safe product that saves me bother [8D]

Like most people, I love to see " GLEAMING" wheels!! With this in mind, I used some alloy wheel cleaner that I previously used on my GSi Vectra' s alloys!! BAD MOVE!! This cleaner was acid based and stripped the lacquer off my wheels leaving a dull finish with a white tinge.

To say I was pissed off is an understatement!!

I had my wheels refurbished at a cost of £160 and since then, I am very careful.

Like a few other Porsche drivers, I also have a company car, which gets put through the local IMO (or whatever the new name is??) car wash once a week.

Over the time, I have got friendly (not in the biblical sense!! ha ha ha) with the franchisee there and he has given me some of their wheel wash stuff which I use on my lacquered wheels when washing my 944 at home. It is great, but it also something that he can only buy through his head office, but if you use one of these car washes, you may be able to buy some of this stuff. It certainly keeps my wheels clean and sparkly.

Regards

Phil

Sorry that this is off topic.

Next time you are looking for a nice pub lunch near Goodwood. Try the Anglesey Arms, Hainaker PO18 0NQ. Tel 01243 773474

It' s only a mile or so from the circuit and the food is alway simple but excellent.
Often times they have Lobster on the menu, at a very reasonable price.

As an added bonus the car parking is good.
