Cleaning exhaust tips......

Hi All I have a GTS with the black tails do you think Autosol will bring them up or do I risk damaging the black. I say this as I tried Brasso and that wrecked the finish but I was lucky my OPC took pity and replaced them as a warranty corrosion claim.

So any personal experience of black tails appreciated

I think Autosol would strip the finish off as it is slightly abrasive. If you just want to shine them, use a good car shampoo and then car polish.

I would definitely avoid using anything abrasive on black pipes. I would try all purpose cleaner, followed by the usual car shampoo and a good scrub.

I suspect Autosol would damage the black finish.

On black I would use all purpose cleaner/degreaser.

Have you heard of 'Bar Keepers Friend' - that stuff is brilliant, I use it on the oven and the oven door.

I have the one that comes in a powder, then you add a bit of water to make a smooth paste and leave it on for a bit.

(you can get it from Wilko/Lakeland/The Range etc)

Chromed tips, I use the Britemax Metal Twin polishes, the cleaner/polish #1, then the sealant/finish #2.

For about £14 they will sort out any metal you throw at them.

Whatever you do, and whatever you have, I'd recommend cleaning with IPA or Panel Wipe, then apply a coat of high temperature wax or sealant such as Gtechniqs brilliant C5 armour (which is actually for wheels) The melting point of that coating is about 350degC

I coated my genuine twin sports tailpipe with C5 and they're still like new after nearly a year.

I definitely wouldn't use bar keepers friend. It's great on stainless steel but I think it's too abrasive for black exhaust tips.

Like most on here I have used Autosol for many years, in fact since I was sixteen with a motorbike! Long time ago!

My tailpipes are chipped on the outside, even on the top! And I've thought of adding something such as a carbon tube on the outside, now there may be an aftermarket kit or unit, the alternative is to remove the tailpipe assembly and get it rechromed as one other member did. Has anyone added a carbon tailpipe?

Re Autosol - I 2nd this 👍🏻

It has the the exact same ingredients as the more expensive (and slightly smaller) tubes of the same stuff from the ‘big brands’.

And I used some cheap (therefore disposable) wire pan scourers from the supermarket to scrub off any caked on exhaust ‘soot’ with simple soapy water. I did this first, before polishing with Autosol.

Happy pipe-polishing..... 👍🏻🤭😉

It is a comfort to me to see that there are others who enjoy polishing their tips :ROFLMAO:

In a similar vein, I've just spent 2 hours detailing one caliper and one wheel - is that sad?

I should get a life.

Rob,

Can I please bring mine around?

Rob,

I think that as Porsche enthusiasts we're all a little bit OCD, but I feel that you might need some help from a trained healthcare professional..!

As above.

I thought mine were black when I first looked at them at the OPC, turned out they just were never cleaned (even on delivery)

0000 wire wool and britemax twins, unfortunately corrosion had set in and started to eat into the finish of the chrome. But I try and keep on top of them and sealing regularly works well.

After giving my car a spring clean at the weekend I've noticed that the winter has rather ravaged my black tailpipes... They have discoloured badly and coating is chipped on the bottom edges & coming off just inside. I've given them a clean using only mildly diluted car shampoo as a bit nervous of using anything stronger but with no improvement - any suggestions...?

The car due it's first service in thousand miles time, what's the chances of being able to claim on the warranty, might also mention that one of the wiper arms has started to go rusty.

I appreciate the car is in daily use and not garaged, but it's still poor on a car that's only just over 18 months old, now wishing I'd chosen the chrome tips as I could just polish them up as I've done on my previous cars!

Thanks for the 'tips' (get it? I'll get my coat) on Autosol, just ordered some, along with some 000 wool.

My query is this, I assume the black on the inside of the exhaust here (RPM fitted a Miltek as a better option over the original PSE, as they said it would last longer) is soot and could, possibly, be removed with the wool? (normal cleaning does not seem to shift it) The car is in the garage, so apologies for the low light, but it goes very black when wet, so assume it is soot, and not black in the insides here? Dont want to attept if you think these aren't chrome inside.

Thanks,

Mark
