Child seats

Can anyone recommend a make and model of forward-facing child seat that fits in the back seat of a 944? Not a booster seat, but the full monty with integral 5-point harness. None of the ones in my local sprog-shop even came close to being small enough!

(Cross-posted to titanic list - apologies if you see both)

After speaking to Quick Fit Belts (and a few other specialists) it turns out that the rigid seat belt stalk needs to be modified, as it' s too high for any child seat. [] Oh well, the wife will have to stay in the back for a bit longer....!

I bought a forward facing child seat from a Porsche main dealer. It is a 3 part type comprising a booster, back rest and a lap table which serves to route the standard seat belt so that it goes across the child' s shoulder. I did quite a bit of research before I bought the seat and was told by a number of specialists that the Porsche seat is the ONLY child seat that is suitable for use in these cars. One of my children is a bit bigger (4 years old), and for him I use a klippan safety belt adjuster without a car seat (about £10 from Halfords).

I am sure I have read somewhere (maybe Porsche Post) that if you take off the Porsche Logo cover from their car seat it is actually a Britax Ranger underneath.

Please check this out before purchasing as I am no expert (my children are 13 and 10 now so have no need)

Tom, did the Porsche seat require any modifications to the seat belts or stalks? Everyone I speak to says that a fitting kit is required, because of the long rigid stalks mounted to the tranmission tunnel. I' m assuming that your S2 will have the same stalks as my S, about 8 inches long from memory.

Alan,

Are you sure you cross posted on Titanic as well? I don' t remember seeing it.

I should cross post again as I am sure I have seen this discussion a number of times over the past few years. Someone on Titanic will have advice.

Hi Alan,

No modifications were required to the car in any way. Your description of the seat buckle sounds the same as mine a nd I can imagine would be a problem with any other seat.

I bought my S2 privately in Reading in July 1999 and dropped into the Reading Porsche dealership on the way home to buy the seat, as I had to pick up my little boy from Nursery that evening. The guy from the parts desk showed me how it fitted together and installed it there and then. The only (in my view optional) modification required is to make a slit in the cloth of the car' s seat to strap the child seat down so it doesn' t move around when not occupied. I didn' t bother with this as I didn' t want to damage the car - I just buckle the safety belt even when the seat is empty to keep it all together.

My kids are growing up fast - I might be selling the seat soon!

Tom, if you' re serious about selling in the near future, I' m certainly interested. QuickFit belts have just quoted me over £200 to do the mods and fit the seat [:(] Also, can I ask a favour? If you have a digital camera, could you post a pic of how the seat is attached? So many of the ' experts' have told me that the belts must be modded, I' m curious to see how the Porsche seat works.

re your seat I too bought said 3 part item, spent an hour watching nice man (service manager) from Dick Lovett Swindon fit the seat in the back of my 928 GTS, only to now wonder everytime my 2 year old gets in, is she safe. My thoughts are it all looks a bit Heath Robinson as the table gizmo slides around etc. Do you have any more luck than myself.

I don' t have any experience myself but have the following info from Titanic,

I went to my local OPC to look at a genuine seat and the assistant said
that he had a second hand one that a customer had used in a Boxster, it
looked like new and was up for £50. so I bought it but he said that they do
occasionaly do get them in so it might be worth checking out your local OPC.
But the genuine seat is a Britax Romer, so you might be able to get it from
a Britax dealer cheaper. And it can be used in any car.

also

The Porsche seat will not fit in the rear. I have two Britax Rangers for
when my 2yr and 3yr olds come out in the S2 - fit a treat - about £50 from
Halfords

and

The Ranger is great, I have two, but you MUST have 3 point belts in the rear not just lap belts for these to work.

It is possible to fit 3 point belts if you only have lap belts in the rear, I believe Quickfit can help with that too,

Tony

Hi Alan,

Here' s a picture of my child seat in situ, buckled up. I' m not that serious about selling the seat right now, as I' d have to buy something to replace it. I' ll post a couple more replies with shots at different angles - don' t seem to be able to attach more than one photo at a time!

Hi Alan,

Another picture of the installed Porsche seat. Note how the seat accomodates the long rigid belt buckle bgy having high sides and the ' table' .

Last one, showing how the child seat fits into the car' s bucket seat. I' d be surprised if any ' normal' seat would fit. See my reply to Peter regarding other options I looked into.

Hi Peter,

I must say that at first I wasn' t too sure about the seat either. When child #2 arrived, I contacted Britax and Klippan to enquire whether they could offer an alternative. They both said that the only seat to use was the Porsche one. Klippan also gave me the number for a specialist, who told me about the Klippan seat belt adjuster that I finally bought for my older child.

I used to use KL Jeenay bucket type adjustable seat in the back of both a 944S" and a 964 without any mods at all. Both cars had 3-point harnesses in the back.

Tom, many thanks for the photos, it' s very useful to see a seat that actually fits (and I have to say your car looks immaculate too [:)]) It looks like the table thingy is really the key to all this. I' ll have to call in at my local OPC and see what they have in stock. The Britax Ranger got a few votes as well (thanks Tony for the summary) so I' ll have another look at that one.
Finally, after a couple of calls to Quick Fit Belts, it turns out they can post me a fitting kit for about £50 - plus I don' t have to drive down there to have it fitted. So I' ve got a fall back if all else fails! [:D]
Many thanks for everyone' s help on this.
