child seat options 996 turbo s

Hello all,

I am due to collect my first Porsche next week, a 800 mile round trip as I live in the highlands. My wife wants to join me for the trip, so that means our daughter will have to come.

My question is, will a normal child seat fit in the back, or even better an isofix type. My daughter is just under two years old, and the car in question is a 2005 Turbo S.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Congratulations on your first Porsche - you won't be disappointed!!

I have two children aged 1 and 2, so similar to yours. You'll be needed the front facing style child seat. There are no ISOFIX fittings in the 996 and you'll find that there isn't enough room for an ISOFIX base anyway. In fact there's limited space in the rear, but that can be easily fixed!

The rear seat bases simply velcro down. This means you can easily lift them out. That creates an extra 2-3" of depth. The rear seat rears are slightly more complicated to remove as you'll need a TORX screwdriver. However, removing those gives you another 5-6" of length.

If you remove both of these, you'll get most car seats in. The one I recommend is the Mamas & Papas Pro-Tech. It fits in easily using the seatbelts and allows reclining of the seat too. They come in plan black to fit in well with a black leather interior.

If you're looking for a buggy, then there are only two that fit in the front boot (your boot is smaller than other 996s as you have 4WD). Go for either the Quinny Zapp (but be prepared to remove the wheels) or the Safety First Surf Stroller. The Safety First folds up very small and fits straight into the base of your boot.

Hope that helps!

Neil.

Thanks very much Neil, great information.

My only issue is that I will have to transport the seats if I remove them, I dout there will there be space to carry them as well? I guess the best option would be to get the dealer to courier them home for me.

....or I might just try to persuade the wife to stay home!

Just to add to the above, mine were the same age when i had the Carrera and I used the Porsche seats but they are of an old design and the Mama and Papas seat is better although the Porsche ones gives them a bit more leg room as the seat base is contoured around the leading edge.
A potty in the car is also useful as a 1)a potty, 2)a vomitting bowl - as i discovered when one had the vomitting bug and i reached for the nearest receptacle and 3)a hat when she then put it on her head after vomitting into it. It was quite an event getting her out of the back without causing further spills.
Enjoy the car - mine do after 4 years of Porsche motoring. It is more practical than most imagine.

Wow, the vomting story sounds like a pile of laughs......I bet it wasn't funny at the time though. Hopefully I don't have such an entertaining trip!

Here's a post I did about 18 months ago with some pics of the M&P Pro Tec
Post about Rear child seats
My boys are nearly 5 & 7 now and are both in the Cybex Solution S seats

I've still got one of the M&P Pro-Tec in the garage (in fact the one in the picture) £20 if anyone wants to pick it up in Peterborough

theres a few page guide in this months "Total 911" mag

Thanks for the replies folks, very helpful of you all.

I will probably just go and buy a M&P seat before the trip....would take your watlina, but Peterborough even further out of my way!

Well folks, car picked up and the three of us plus baggage all made it home safe, seat fitted well behind passenger seat, but I had to drive all the way as I couldn't fit with the toddler behind me hehe!!

Loving the car so far.....more questions to follow!

+1 for practicality believe it or not (as you found on the way home :)).

I had a 300zx 11 years ago, the rear bench required a custom seat to be ratchet strapped and bolted into the back, and leg room didn't exist. The rear boot was only about 10" deep and a buggy folded would not fit in. There was zero storage too, no pockets, all in all a real pain in the ass when we took it out.

My daughter is a lot older now, so no need for those bits, but, a booster fits in the back fine, the front luggage compartment will get four bags of shopping in and still have enough room for another four + extras on top (or several sports bags). The back has plenty of room for kids (daughter is 9 and tall for her age at over four and a half foot), but still has head room and leg room. There's lots of pockets, I can't believe how deep and how much room exist in the door compartments (it's like having two glove boxes!). My daughter loves the buckets or 'pods' in the back too, gives her something to lean on in the middle. And the other side can cater for all her 'other' stuff she brings along. There's also the shelf in the back if you don't have the sub box installed there.

All in all, they are great cars, and something you can actually take the family out in and enjoy together :D

Hope you enjoy her for many years to come :)
