Changing a gearbox

Very easy especially with the right kit - nothing specialist just normal garage stuff, 2 - 3 hours maybe.
17 or 18 bolts/ screws! Hard bit is lifting the box at the right angle back in to place.
I did mine on the drive in 4.

When I did mine I couldn't get any of the local garages to give me a price up front, so I ended up doing it myself. I did it in a day on my own, but I reckon a local garage should be able to do it in 4 hours (allowing for cups of tea) providing nothing goes wrong like stripped threads etc. I got lucky with mine and discovered the replacement box, which I paid £70 for had an LSD in it.

If you haven't already got a box, try mcporsche-9s on ebay, he's not far from you and a good reliable source of 944 parts.

 
Yeah the black one is indeed mine. Having now sold it three times on ebay and had three different stories about why they cant come to collect it, Im going to put a new gearbox in it and a new interior and keep it for a while I think. Itd be a shame to sell it for peanuts when its been such a good reliable car.
 
So the reason it hasn't 'sold' will have nothing to do with the statement in your E-Bay ad
( including the 2nd ad that ended recently) reading

" There is a slight crunch when changing into 3rd gear - more obvious when changing down from 4th, rarely does it when changing up from 2nd. Most likely needs a gearbox oil change, MAY get the opportunity to get this done before the end of the auction, cannot promise however "

And the fact that you clearly know a gearbox oil change is not what is required or you wouldnt be looking to change the gearbox !

May I be so bold as to suggest that genuine Porsche enthusiasts may be ever so slightly put off by you saying it needs an oil change in your ad and then coming on to a club forum and saying it needs a new gearbox, which clearly it does. Someone less generous than myself might even suggest your ad was misleading.

But to answer your Q. only thing I had to buy extra what I didn't have as a standard thing in my toolbox was a 12 spline key to unbolt the driveshalfs from the box. did an Automatic gearbox change (which is a darn sight heavier and awkward than a manual)

Anyway actually work time added upto 5 hours and that was just with the rearend jecked up on the driveway in December and mainly in the snow (and yes I have pics to prove it LOL)
 
I did put a bid on it, but I did so knowing it would need a gearbox change having had exactly the same crunching a couple of years ago with my lux. To be honest I wouldn't have bid more than £700 for the car in its current state, bad gearbox, bad interior and 187k miles, but if the gearbox and interior gets swapped it will be worth quite a bit more, in my opinion, maybe 2k.

I get what you are saying, but if you check my post history, I asked about the gearbox on here, and someone said that changing the oil may sort it out. Im far from being a mechanic, so took that as read when making the listing. A couple of people emailed me and said it would more likely need a gearbox, hence me now looking at replacing it. No misleading was intended, and as the ad stated, viewing was recommended. I cant imagine buying a car like a 944 without actually viewing it myself.....
 
Has a different part number in the PET, but any box will physically fit, the earlier ones (82-85) dont have the connection for the speedo so avoid them. The S box probably had different ratios.
 
According to the data sheet that I have in front of me the gear ratios are indeed different from that of a lux of the same year. That doesn't suprise even a non mech like me since the engine is designed to be reved to high heaven [;)]

If its any help the chap I bought my first 944 from, which was an S, paid 400 for an S2 box and paid Northway 800 for it to be fitted along with power steering belt, alt belt and a couple of wheel bearings.
 
Try giving Hartech a ring, shouldn't be any more than 4 hours labour for the experts and they're not a million miles from you.
 
You can put any box you want in but ideally should stick with the one for a Lux. The Lux boxes will also be the cheapest. The ones for the S2 and Turbo are designed for a car with more power so will have taller gearing.

Car is an S given 1st post and may have different ratios due to it power delivery characteristics. but any will be ok providing it has speedo pickup - 86 model year on.
 
An S2 transaxle is the closest match to that from a 944S. The final drive is very slightly different (on the S to other cars) and fifth is lower on the S2 box.
