I removed both sides of the boot liner/cover, and removed the cd player. I Checked the firbre optic plug and I seemed to be in good working order and transmitted the no cd changer signal to the head unit when I disconnected it. I did another reset and examined the cd changer. It was apparent that apart from clicking in the magazine the head was not traversing across the magazine; I ejected the magazine and operated the actuating slide that is pushed down when the mag is inserted and nothing else happened. After a few tries suddenly the the head started to index across stopping at each position (this was accompanied by the whirring noise I said I couldn't hear in previous posts so at least I was moving forward) and I was able to observe the operation of the disc selector "tweezers", for want of a better word, and they seemed to be working as you might expect them to, but they would not extract any of the cds from the mag, I checked that the disc release tab was able to engage on the release tab, and thought well I might as well clean the "tweezers" with a cotton bud wetted with some methylated spirit. I dried the surfaces with another bud and tried again; still nothing. So I went to get a torch and shone it in the narrow slot to see if the changer was making any attempt to pull the disc out. Suddenly I saw a glint of something shiny move across the opening and it seemed to have loaded the cd so I checked the head unit and was encouraged to see a load magazine message in the box, and after the magazine had loaded I was able to play a cd for the first time.; not only that it had read the presence of two more cds (all of which came with the car), which I was also able to play. So it now seems to be working properly and was just having a sulk; but seriously, it was probably because the car has spent a lot of its life not being used (04 model 24,000 miles)and the whole mechanism had just stiffened up due to lack of use and the continual operation of the mechanism finally freed it up. I now know where the brake servo lives.
