Cayman GT4: Where are we up 2 now? Déjà vu Edition

Well, that's May gone and yet another rumour milestone passed (there was supposed to be a press release this month in advance of the appearance of a car at the Goodwood FoS - but don't hold your breath..!).

Meanwhile, here's the latest clip of a Spyder running at the 'Ring. Despite the naysayers, it sounds OK to me with the GPF fitment.

I hope it still has the snap, crackle and pop

It has some growl, but where's the scream? Far too bassy a note for my liking.

I don't think there'll be anywhere near as many cracks/pops/bangs this time. Emissions regs will stop them happening I think, given that they're produced by overfuelling.

To be honest Dave, I wouldn't say that the 981 GT4 could be categorised as a screamer. I quite like a bassy note myself, but then at my age my perception of high frequencies is now seriously impaired. And just remember that the balance of sound you hear in the coupé cabin will be very different from all these static exterior sound clips.

Maybe the "Rice Krispies" exhaust fad has had its day now? Ralph's link for the explanation has its merits but I think that it's just as likely to be produced by retarding the ignition timing, unburnt fuel then coming into contact with a hot exhaust and causing an explosion. Either way, I can't believe that inducing substantial shock waves in the exhaust system won't have an impact on cat converter/GPF long-term durability.

Jeff

True, the 981 GT4 wasn't much of a screamer either. I was hoping for an improvement in that department, but I don't think there'll be one unfortunately. It seems the bhp bump has come through capacity increase alone, which is a shame.

If it's to be +40hp then it will have to more than just a capacity increase - throttle body/intake plenum and DME will all need to have been revised - and I reckon we'll see variable valve timing and lift included on the exhaust cams this time, together with additional technology developed for the turbo engines.

Jeff

Thanks Brian,

I’ll be re-learning it at Donnington on the 18th ...

I hope it will be quiet !!

Cx.

The last Porsche Post has the Clubsport race version with 419 bhp at 7500rpm ... but that's with the 3.8.

It's interesting to compare this with the Ehressman tune .. I wonder what the torques will be ?

Is the end nigh?

It looks likely that the Swiss poster was correct three weeks ago when he said June 18 would be the announcement date.

We’ll need to start a new thread on deviating stitching. [:)]

So they are teasing the Spyder. Do we think it'll be both together?

More than eighteen months and still counting - this has become worse than tedious..!

I can't see the significance of 18th June, but in the context of what's happened up till now, who knows? Believe it when you see it.

Jeff

The significance of 18th of June is.....it’s my wife’s birthday.

i after that the waiting has become tedious. After my next service (September) I am going to try some headers, intake and a tune to see if that 40hp was always there...it will be cheaper than my “loss/charge” on trade in for the new one.

I rather her like my 981 GT4 the way it is, only 7000 miles and so I am not going to bother trying for the new one.

I am sure you have all noticed that the number of GT4s on the UK approved site has dropped to c12 from it regular level in Q1 of c.20. Stock management/or owners holding them to trade in, I am not sure.

Snowy

Ha! That's as good a reason as any Snowy.

A sensible idea to upgrade your GT4 rather than trading-in - which I'm sure many will be planning to do. Expect a (relative) glut of cars and possible softening of 981 GT4 prices when deliveries of the 718 GT4 start ramping-up. Perhaps I'll be able to lay my hands on one at a sensible price - at last.!
