Cayman 2.7 2015 issue

got my Cayman 2.7 in Sept and recently had a couple of worrying issues that OPC haven't been able to solve - by the time car returned to them the issue has gone without trace. Posted on this previously but didn't get any other users with similar experience, so trying one last time.
It's a metallic rasping noise that happens periodically, sounds like a metal on metal (tin) rattle BUT it very intermittent and only lasts a matter of seconds then is gone again for some time. No loss of power during the noise and generally only happens at low speed. My question is, does anyone else have this and could it be caused by twigs/small stones getting into where the fans are? I live in the wilds and most roads are covered in small twigs and debris.
The car was taken back to the OPC in November and they had it for a few days and basically stripped the engine bay without finding anything - even drove the car with the internal covers off so that they could hear anything happening that shouldn't, nothing.
Any thoughts, don't really want to send it back to OPC again without some form of evidence that they can look at.

We had gravel that had got into the 981 air intake apparently OPC spotted it whilst in for its first service although we never noticed any noise they did.

 
I've had my 2.7 Cayman since October and had no issues Colin.

The car is parked in a tree lined street and lots of small twiggs which have broken off the trees have ended up in front of the air-con condensors, a few bits including leaves could also be seen in the side air intakes. I've removed these regularly and not noticed any issues.

I hope you get it sorted as it's a great little car.

 
While fitting the Zunsport Grilles will prevent leaves sticks etc in the intakes you may wish to get PC approval on it before doing so as some are very wary of fitting anything none-standard. The club discount code should still give 20% off if you wish to take it.

You don't say just where you think the noise is coming from but it is possible some debris is getting trapped by the dust shields on the brakes, many have had the problem and if it is sticks or twigs they would wear down and fall out very quickly.

 
Intermittent problems are the worst type of issue to sort out Colin. Even trickier when they're of such short duration such as yours.

As Kevan has said, it's important to try to identify where the noise is coming from if you can - front, rear, powertrain, wheels/brakes.

From what you say, it certainly could be something to do with the brake shields - maybe in combination with the handbrake??

Unless you've been very unlucky, I can't see how a twig would find its way through the front (a/c and coolant) rads but there are fans in the engine bay which control the temperature there.

Hi all, thanks for the responses. Sorry meant to say that the noises come from just behind my left elbow - first thing I had checked when it happened was the brakes, wheels and any debris in the side pods or front intakes - nothing showing - I was thinking more that it might be getting into the engine bay via the underside of the car or around the rear wheel arches as there doesn't seem to be any great protection there.

To be honest did 80 mile this morning and no sign of any issues, love the car but just intermittent niggles - especially when the OPC is so far away (3 hours from me).

I'll just carry on enjoying the car and hope that it's nothing serious and can be sorted next visit to OPC.

Hi Colin

I had the same problem as you, it was very frustrating. I had a friend of mine to sit in the pax seat but no sign of this noise.

Eventually I found the cause: it was the pax seat belt metal tongue rattling against the hole whence it comes out of.

Try fitting the pax belt in its groove as if it was been worn. I think this will solve your problem.

Brendan's reply reminds me of a noise I had a few years ago on my Gen1S, I was searching around the seat belt and passenger seat for ages, it seemed to be behind the trim and eventually I found that the nut that secured the rear quarter light on the LH side while not being loose allowed the fitting to move and make a squeaking noise, all that the OPC did was to spray it and then by the time I drove home it had returned, I tried using grease and I tried Loctite but in the end the only thing that stopped it was to remove the nut clean everything and to then paint both sides of the washer with clear lacquer while other things had worked for a time the lacquer fixed it permanently.

 
nope, not the seat belt or retainer or anything in the cab, definitely coming from the engine bay but so intermittent it might never be found.....as instructed by the OPC I'll just carry on enjoying (and hope that nothing goes bang!) fingers crossed......

 
Hi Colin

If it's definitely not inside the cab have you tried to remove the cover behind the seats (covering engine/ belts etc), only half a dozen bolts.

You could have a run out with a passenger who can listen out for the noise- just thinking !! - you said it was near to your left elbow

Alternatively, has anything been sucked into exterior air intake on passenger side & rattling inside the air box ??

I think that Colin has said that the PC ran with the internal covers removed - presumably the top and front covers - without finding the problem, so I think it's probably just one of those very annoying intermittent problems which surface on rare occasions and that may one day be resolved. Meanwhile, I think his PC's advice just to enjoy the car is the best course of action; then if something breaks they'll have something to fix (hopefully under warranty).

We've probably all got a few niggles here & there with our vehicles that we just live with because the driving experience outweigh these
