Cayman Ist Gen 2.7 2008: Has anyone experienced a knocking or clunking noise (not juddering) when turning the steering wheel to the right at slow speed when maneuvering the car forward and reverse? Doesn’t occur when turning wheel in opposite direction. It’s a manual gearbox.

Any idea where the noise is coming from - front or back? Does the knocking continue or is it just on first application of steering lock etc. You don't say what mileage but it could be any number of age and use related things just reaching end of life.

Hi Bob,

As John says you need to identify where the noise is coming from - most likely from the front from what you say? If so, it could emanate from the steering column [Hooke’s joint?], steering rack or steering/suspension joints, and it would be useful to get the car on a lift for a closer inspection of the various components to check for play.

Also, can the knocking be heard outside and can it be reproduced when the car is stationary?

Hopefully a few things to work on there before you get back to us.

Jeff
