Castor Mounts

A couple of questions gents, i have a Turbo S with MO30 it has had recent new OEM (£££) front struts, I am going to get a full geometry set up.
I am wondering what are the benefits of 968 castor mounts are they worth fitting and what is involved in fitting ? i am reasonably competent with the spanners.
TIA Jim.

Youve nothing to lose! Are you running 16" wheels or larger (if larger then theyre essential, according to the manufacturer)? Simon

Regardless of the tyre size you are running you will benefit from this upgrade.

There is less rubber in them so they halp keep the front geometry more accurate under load. You shold also get a more positive feel to the steering as well.

Another recommendation from me too, they reduce tramlining and improve the responsiveness of the front end. I'd have thought Exeter OPC with the club discount is probably going to be amongst the cheapest, so definately worth giving them a call.

When I bought mine from Bert @ Berlyn last year, it appeared from the OPCs that these were now the only replacement available for the original 944 rubbery ones. They did make a noticeable difference for me, especially with the 18" wheels I'm running.

ORIGINAL: Frenchy 17" Cup 1's Simon, how are they better ?why recommended ? with 17's
Beyond the testimonials above, Porsche stated that 944-derived cars should only be run with 17" wheels after this upgrade. It was in a technical bulletin in the earlyish 1990s.

Oooh Jim you haven't been reading all the threads have you? [;)] We discussed the new caster mounts a few days ago. Look half way down this thread about tyres, Thom posted a nice cutaway pic: [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=422600&mpage=2&key=castor&#424744]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=422600&mpage=2&key=castor&#424744[/link] I have the newer mounts on both my cars and it makes a noticeable improvement even with 16" wheels. They were circa £40 from an OPC last time I checked

Cheers for that Paul, looks like fitting them is straight forward ? anyone ? I only get on every few days so missed the original post. On the subject of wheel sizes i drove a late turbo with standard suspension and some very horny looking 18" split rims it was horrible to drive [:-] i do believe that our cars feel better on original 16" rims but i love the look of Cups on a 944. I hope to get to a few meets/shows this year, i contemplated selling the turbo due to extreme lack of use and running 3 cars £££££££££££. But my heart is ruling my head and it is not going to happen i know for a fact that if someone else drove away in it i would regret it plus i do not think people will pay what the car is worth to me ! All said and done i bought it back after about 4 years as i missed it that much, car has been played with and a Ferrari 360 had to work hard to leave it as Clarkson said no better for Bang for Bucks. Regards Jim.

It is possible to replace them without touching the caster adjustment but it is a bit of a hassle, as you need to secure the front nut of the eccentric with a key while loosening the rear nut with another key in the hope the rear nut will loosen before the front nut [:)] You sound like you will have a geometry set up afterwards so you don't really need to bother keeping the caster adjustment exactly like it was before.

Cheers Gents, it looks as though Hartech are selling them quite cheap so will order a couple for tomorrow.

Now I find this, after only ordering them the other week for my 968 from Exeter. ISTR they cost a fair wack several years ago when I bought a pair for the S2. What was said above is interesting as well, I was told sometime ago by an OPC that this part superceedes the original 944 item but the PET lists different part numbers for 944, M030 and 968. I guess what he said is correct if the other parts are no longer available. Just as well because IMHE it is the best upgrade you can do on the car. BTW my 92 MY 968 has 944 S2 bushes! Strange isn't it, seems like this bush wasn't introduced until at least 93 build cars.

I thought the service bulletin relative to 968 castor bushes were that you should fit them if you install 18" rims. Anyway, I got mine about three years ago for £68 a pair from my local OPC so seems like prices have increased somewhat.

£35 each, plus VAT and postage and othersuch, according to this: [link=http://www.hartech.org/parts.html]http://www.hartech.org/parts.html[/link] Oli. ETA: Is there a discount with Hartch for club membership?
