just had to cal the AA to start the car after it refused to start. I had driven for 30 minutes including a good stretch down the A3 to come home, popped into the off licence and then it refused to start

After 30 minutes it started first time, bit embarassing as the AA man was with me by then

The fuel pump was wirring, I could hear it< AA man suggested problem was fuel pressure ? or the K jet injector ?

any advice would be appreciated, feel a bit nervous about driving it again before I get it fixed

thanks

The way to diagnose this is by zee process of eelimination Johnathan! Did the starter turn the crank or was it just dead?

I had a similiar problem with my 911 Supersport Carrera. Car would run and occasionally not start, but the Starter Motor would whirr.

Mechanic (Visit 1) - checked starter motor(seemed new) and added extra earthing straps to body.
Auto Elec (Visit 2) - checked all wiring and replaced battery as a precaution.
Auto Elec No 2 (Visit 3) - checked the immobiliser - tested ok.
Auto Elec No 3 (Visit 4) - checked all circuits and located a fault in immobiliser. One wire was too thin to carry load. This wire was bypassed and the car started regularly............for 2 weeks.

Then the problem went from being intermittent to every time (at least it was predictable), Unfortunately this was during my trip to Ireland with the Porsche Club GB/Carole Nash. I had to be pushed off the ferry!

So with the car now not starting at all I took it to yet another Auto Electrician

Auto Elec No 4 (Visit 5) - disabled immobiliser and checked circuits - immediately found that the solenoid terminations were rusted away. A New solenoid sorted it. Car starts every time now.

...popped into the off licence and then it refused to start
After 30 minutes it started first time...

You spent 30 minutes in the off-licence?! :)

Sorry - absolutely no help I know.

Although... This reminds me of a tech question in this months P&911World - "Q&A" p110. JZ Machtech's answer was to check several fuel-injection componenets for pressure leakage.

Hope it's sorted soon,
Rich Claridge

I have a similar problem. My SC starts when it's cold, but when it gets hot, then left to stand for 30 mins or so will usually fail to start. When it cools down again, it will start. I haven't had time to check yet, but wonder whether it could be the cold start valve leaking and causing flooding.
Good luck and post how you get on.

Guys when you say your car doesn't start from hot do you mean the starter doesn't turn the crank or it cranks but won't fire. If it's the latter it immeadiately excludes the starter and if it's the former the fix might be simple.

bones

when I tried to start the car i could hear a wirring noise, which I assumed was the fuel pump but that was all, no attempt by the engine to turn over, no other noises
I tried a few times then gave up as guessed I would flood the engine otherwise
I was lucky enough to be stopping at the of-licence within 200m of home, so I wandered home and called the AA, after waitnig for around 30 minutes the AA called, i walked back to the car and just for good luck tried it.........it then worked

Sounds like the starter needs repairing if it doesn't even turn over. Mine suddenly started doing the same thing when hot. A rebuilt unit cured the problem. Try hitting it with a large spanner if you get stranded at the roadside!

So the engine doesn't even turn over on the starter? Mine had a spell of doing that (lets hope its only a spell). Garage checked over, found nothing wrong, diagnosed more use, so thats what I have done. But it dod strand us (mrs and me) on several occasions.

Work colleague had theory that internals might be getting dirty (carbon dust from brishes perhaps).

IF you can get at it you need to test to make sure power is getting to the starter when key is turned.

If its done high mileage how about going for recon starter anyway; think about how many times the poor thing has had to turn over those 3 litres...

You had the AA man with you in 30 mins !! I waited nearly 3 hours last night. Things are not always as bad as they could be [;)]

My car will spin fine on the starter, but it won't fire.
I've read more on this and it seems that a fuel pressure problem may be the most likely so will start looking in that direction.

I have the same problem with low cold start fuel pressure since I rebuilt it and fitted a new fuel filter but it starts enthusiastically second twist of the key. I think the problem wiuth mine is an injector but it could be a number of things including a faulty fuel pump check valve, the Aux Air Reg' or the Warn Up Regulator. The fuel accumulator is a cheap replacement part but this is usually associated with fuel vaporisation at hot starts.
