Car won't start when cold

My car has failed to start for the first time.
Last week it took a while to start and then when it did, it would cut out below 1000 revs unless I kept my foot on the gas.
Then it seemed to fix itself for a while, but tonight it won't start at all.

Battery is fine and it turns the starter motor fine but its just as if the engine won't catch. This is the first time the car has let me down and I'm a bit frustrated. Anyone know what it could be?

Could be the DME coolant temperature sensor mate. It is quite easy to test if you are that way inclined and about 16 quid to replace.
 
Thank you Rob. I am pretty able at doing things so how would I go about testing it? I have a voltmeter lying around somewhere.
I wouldn't want to buy what you suggest only to find it is something else

Disconnect the DME computer electrical connector

Is the DME the large thing in the fuse box? Im quite ignorant of this.
Will this explain why it started during the day when it was warmer and only had this problem now it is cold and damp outside?

OK the one in the second picture is for the dashboard gauge. On the right of that pic is the DME coolant sensor. The DME or ECU is loactaed in the passenger footwell. Pull back the carpet and remove the wooden yes wooden plate. You will see a black metal frame with a silver box on the back with a 3-4 inch long multi plug on the top. This is the DME. The sensor is located under the intake manifold at the front of the engine. It is a bit fiddly to get to but easily doable.

I'm a little confused as this part looks like the temperature sender unit for the dashboard guage :S

If anyone could post a link to a cheap DME coolant temp sender it would be much appreciated as I want to get my car working again. My wife is due to go into labour within the next week and I could really do with it :)
