Car needed for Performance Car show

Hi All,

I've been asked to see if there's a suitable 944 to be displayed on the Club stand at the NEC from 8th-11th January. It'll need to be left on the stand for the duration, but it's a great chance to have your pride and joy paraded for the pleasure of the show's visitors!

It might well end up as a 924S, but we need a car that's in "honest" condition, and cost less than around the £1k mark. The idea being that it shows the fantastic value of the cars and how well they compare with the more so-called "exotic" Porsches. So, not a concourse car necessarily but a proper everyday 44 that anyone could aspire to owning.

If you think you can help, there'll be free tickets etc. thrown in, then contact myself or Geoff Ives. Numbers are in Porsche Post or Porschefile.

Answer is probably a 924/924S is more likely to be the one, but the offer's there to a 944 owner as well.

I reckon there's a few early 944s changing hands at under £1k that might only need minor work to become pretty good cars. This isn't a call for a special car worth shedloads, but proof that you can get a useable Porsche for under £1k if you choose well.

Remember Top Gear's "Porsches under £1k"? When was that, a few years ago? Well, prices have fallen dramatically since then, so I don't think it's as tall an order as it sounds!

I know of one but it's up here in Scotland for sale! Very early model in red, up for sale to fund the owner's prospective purchase of my 1987 oval-dash version "¦ go on, someone buy it and show it off at the NEC. The guy will definitely take less than a grand for it.

That's not really true..

My '82 944 Lux cost just short of a grand (£999, private sale from a guy who doesn't live too far from me) and the whole bodyworks fine, no rust, undersealed, generally looked after and given the thumbs up by the local mechanics who gave it the once over.

Ok, i have had to replace the tyres, rear brakes, rear discs and rear bearings but this could be considered 'general wear and tear' items?

I think if your lucky, you never know what you might find for a grand. []

No, this meeting is open for non-members as well. It's a chance to meet the Club team, see the facilities at the HQ and get to know a bit more about us. Of course, being a member would entitle you to feel less guilty as you drink the free coffee! []

its quite possible to get a 944 under 1k, mine was under £700, needed wheel bearings/discs/pads/tyres and a service.. all up ~£1100

it is however wearing sideskirts/valence and non-standard metallic black paint


the topgear challenge was staged TV entertainment . the cars were all complete dogs for the £1500 budget they were given.. i bought a 924 that year for £750 quid, changed the oil/dizzy cap and plugs and drove it from bristol to the french alps the next day.

I had a £995 '85 944 as my first Porsche. Only about three/four years ago. It was a little agricultural, but I drove it from Glasgow to Hull and back, from Glasgow to Preston and back, and so on. No problems at all, just a bit rough around the edges!

After a few months of fun, I sold it for £1,000"”making five pounds profit!

Ok Paul, had a quick think about it, if you want to pencil my car in for the NEC show, that's fine by me.

You can always confirm the final 'yes or no' at the Cornbury House meeting to make sure the cars what your looking for. []

If not, i'm sure there's loads of other 944 owners who are willing to step up for this opportunity.
