Can't select gears

Went for a drive today and then parked up for a bit of shopping. When I got back in, started her up but couldn't get it in gear. Clutch pedal seemed to be working fine. Switched off and and put her in gear and limped home in first, thankfully only about 1/4 mile. Left her a few minutes turned her over again but still couldn't select a gear. Repeated this procedure a few times then all of a sudden I could select gears again. Took her for a spin and everything seemed fine. This has now happened about three or four times in the last two years although I only go out about once a month or so. I've checked all the places I should for hydraulic fluid leaks and had a garage check it over although they weren't porsche specialists and found no problems. Any ideas as I'm scathing my head. The car is a 1989 Turbo. With thanks Gary

Similar to how my clutch behaved when it was worn out, I couldn't select gears then when it was cool I drove it home 100 miles or so, then it failed again, was on the rivets, strange thing was it wasnt really slipping, just difficult to disengage. the springs were broken up too so could have been a spring trapped somewhere it shouldn't.

Sounds like your clutch is going to me. Also check your clutch fluid reservoir as well as your flexi hose to make sure it isn't going porous,

I don't think it is the clutch as the period between each time it has done it has been months and it has drove with perfect gear selections and no slipping in these periods. We have found no leaks or extra usage of hydraulic fluid either.

Can you hear any noise when you shut it down with the door open, my loose, broken springs 'tinkled'
Tony

To echo the above, clutch.
I couldn't engage lower gears but 3rd and 4th were fine.
There was no grinding it just wouldn't go in.
I had 2 springs missing from the plate!
How many miles has it been since it was done?

Oh no I hope not. Oh well I'm taking it to my indie at the end of the month for an MOT and cambelt change so I'll get him to check it out. Quite an expensive job so I'm led to believe. Thanks for your help guys
