Can't Be Bothered Anymore.....!!

that doesn't sound good Pete.. what's up, I thought the car was going in for some serious engine work this winter... what happened?

Pete

Noooo! Don't become an Ex-944

What's changed? Thought your car was a lovely example.

Keep the faith Pete!

Hi Pete,

What's up?

Car looked good, you had plans and the wife brought it for you!

Hope you change your mind and keep it!

Don,t do that, get a couple of good long runs in the car and hopefully it will change your mind.

Sounds like you may already have decided. If you haven't entirely, think about it for a few weeks to "make sure". It is just a car after all. You can always buy another if you realise afterwards you've made a mistake. Good luck whatever.

Hi guys, not "attention seeking" here i can assure you. I just don't get the time to use him like i thought i would. Had/have some great plans for him this winter of which Jon Mitchell was/is going to play a big part. I dunno. A certain person i know keeps trying to persuade me to buy an Ultima and, i'm sorely tempted i must say. The idea has been on my mind for some time now and i just can't make my mind up. Dunno what to do?? The plans for the Turbo would cost me around 15k whilst i can pick me up a (Black) Ultima in tip top spec' and condition for around 30k. And, let's face it, the Ultima is a full on,road legal track/race car which will drive the wheels off practicaly anything on the track! Not to mention "go cart" handling and stopping power. Can you see my dilema? Is it worth chucking 15k at a 1989 rwd Turbo? Perhaps i'm just having an off day! Sorry to bother you all with such trivia. It all seems rather silly now ive read through it! My wife say's that there are far more important issues in life than my mid life crisis and, i'm inclined to agree with her! Still don't stop me wondering what time i'd lap the "Ring" in an Ultima though!![:D]

Skyline,
Mine are kept in the garage and do not see enough "roadtime" and TBH are a luxury, but when i do take them out they make me smil,e a bit of an occasion for me, the Ultima thing sounds great (awesome) but will probably get less roadtime than the 944.
Get the map out and take the Missus down to Italy or somewhere else in Europe next year and enjoy, you will be able to fit your bags and the kitchen sink in there sit in comfot and have a turn of speed when required and be in something pretty bulletproof.
Chill, take time out and have a serious think about it.......................Just my 2P !

Cheers Frenchy[:)]. I know what you mean mate and, my kid's love the 944 Turbo. If i,m honest the Ultima thing has been on my mind for about two years now and wont go away. I just missed out on one near where i live, just before my missus bought me the Porsche. She is dead against me parting with the last of my savings on an exotic sports car but, has said she wont stop me if that's what i want. The 944 is more up my street i know (i'm 56 for fcuk's sake)! And my one is a lovely example......... Decision time me thinks[;)]

my advice is you only live once .......do whatever your heart desires [;)]

The Ultima is a very good car but quite a lot to live with. They are not the most comfortable cars for doing distance work and are noisy and hot even with the aircon option. Very fast though, my mates one had the full 720 bhp engine option and weighed in at 1036 kgs with half a tank of fuel! It is the fastest thing I have ever been in, the acceleration was truly frightening in the thing.

I guess you'll know the answer deep down already but I guess it's just down to what you want - two very different cars but if the Ultima ticks all the boxes and is what you're hankering after then go for it - unless you can keep both of course [8D]

Good luck with whichever route you chose mate [;)]

If you want an all round car that can do everything then stick with the 944T, however if you want a full on hypercar and need to scratch that itch then get the Ultima.

If you do drop £15k into 944 modifications then just remember you will never get anything like it back and the car will be very difficult to sell as only one or two people in the country would be interested. I don't know anything about Ultimas but I imagine that a totally standard one will not lose you any money, the market for one would be much larger than a modded 944T and it would still run rings around the highest modded 94 in the country.

Very sensible advice in my view. Most people dont understand tuned/improved cars and see a 944 (any Porsche) as a potential money pit. A 944 with £15k spent will only be worth a bit more than a decent standard one as people tend to look for FSH and a car thats not been messed with and in particular if its been done up for speed on track there`s even less trust in it from the average punter. I would simply tune the 944 to around 300bhp (easy and not too expensive) and stick it on slicks on track.

Ironically the chap that bought my 944T sold his Ultima as it was too fast and too impractical to use apart from the odd track day and sunny weather. 500 bhp on the average UK road he told me is absolutely pointless.

What about a decent Cayman? [;)] That should do all you need for £30k or if you want a fantastic track car then look no further than an M5 on stickies or slicks.

We've seen enough heavily-modified 944 projects here over the years, and as I've said before, most seem to take longer and cost more than planned, the owner runs out of enthusiasm and they move on. The car is sold on for a fraction of the cost, and they rarely seem to stay in the 944 "community". Mark K's is one exception, PSH another but then he's also at a crossroads.

Is it a pure track car you want? If so, the Ultima is obviously better but won't it be horrible and impractical on the road? What's wrong with just the lightly-tweaked 944 on the road, and save the £15K? Keep the 944 as a decent road car, and spend the £15K on hiring track stuff perhaps, or a really good little track car like Ed's Civic? I've been passengered in that and it was a bonkers little car; massive fun and lower costs compared with the compromised road/track 944s IMO.

Agree with paul too. Spend £10k on a cossie powered caterham, a couple of grand on trick bits and a decent helmet, and the rest on your 944, best of both worlds..
