Hi
Can any of you guy's help?
My oval dashboard lights keep going out, I've read previous posts on the subject and have come to the conclusion the best answer would be to replace the current bulbs with either FlamingEye or Jager LED kit.
My question is does anyone have a weblink to a supplier of said item, or if anyone on here has a spare kit that they they're will to part with, I have the cash waiting.

... and is it the illumination lights which are going out, or does the whole thing go dead? (i.e. Warning lights go off, instruments cease to read etc etc etc).

Sounds like a dodgy connection to me, the question is which connection.

Oli.

Flamingeye kit isn't available any more, the Jeager one comes from the states so not cheap if you only buy one. I've got one here in the blue if you want it, unused as the S2 has perfectly good lighting and I don't want to change it for no reason.

Just better to sort out if it's corroded reflectors, or some other problem, before ripping it apart! [:)]

Hi Paul

It's the illumination lights that go out intermitently, have taken out the instrument cluster on a number of ocassion replacing the bulbs and also the three bulb holders. Its now worn away the copper strip around the bulb holders on two of three holes. So is a weak earthing on these, my conclusion is to replace the inaffective bulbs completely and go the route of replacement LED kit.

Hi Tony
If the relevant bits ie the contacts, are worn, it sounds like a replacement unit is required.
Its easy to swap the speedo to keep milage correct, or they can be "adjusted" with out too much problem (just added 250 000 to mine to get it something like correct)
Cheers

Hi Tony,

I had after market LED replacement bulbs in mine when I got it and I hated them, the main problem was that they were too dim, and the light was a very `white' light ( if that makes sense ) and didn't look right. I took out one of the bulb holders , went to a scrapyard and bought a handfull of the correct type for £3.00 !! - which included the bulbs !

I did have a problem where some of the copper strip had disintegrated, but I repaired it by very carefully laying down solder over it, I did it 2 years ago and have never had a problem since.

Only issue I have with my oval dash is about 6 months ago the trip meter stopped resetting?? it still counts but pushing the trip button doesn't reset it. I've checked all the wiring, made sure the dash button lines up with the button at the back and checked the circuit to the best of my abilities, result nothing. I did reset it once whilst on the move but it still worked afterwards so I've given up for the moment.

I thought it was mechanical, rather than electrical? That's why resetting it on the move is discouraged; the brittle, aged plastic doesn't take to the extra strain!

The switch operates a solenoid which bangs a gear in the trip drive and can push it out of position if the cars moving.

Hi Mike
I replaced the instrument cluster unit around 4 months ago for the same reason.
At £50 a throw for a replacement unit, just to have the same problem reoccur again in such a short period of time, I've decided scrap the original set-up all together and look for an alternative.

Hi Paul
Thanks for generious offer, I would like to buy the Jager kit off of you.

Just sort of passing through the posts and saw this.
Mine doesn't work,is it an easy repair?

Not completely sure how easy it is as I've not had to do it - I have played with the odometer and seen the trip setup and would guess its straight forward enough

Just had a quick look at my old dash (still oval!) and found the speedo / odo / trip is totally different!
The motor that drives the odo is about 5 times the size to start with!
But to sort the trip out should be - split the dash unit, hold the back of the unit, dials facing down (otherwise some rubber washers will come lose!) slacken the 3 or 4 screws (depending upon version) about 1/4inch and play with the trip unit and it should sort itself.
