Can the lower part of the dash be removed

Can anyone tell me if the lower part of the oval dash can be removed? The reason for the question is that the upper part of my dash has suffered cracks from the sun. The lower part of my dash is cream, so if I were to purchase a black dash would it be possible to swap the lower parts over.

Thanks

Wayne

i have several black and cream dashes if you need one or are you intending to go all black.

all plastic trims can be swapped.

The answer is no, the top and bottom parts cant be separated: the dash is in a single piece. Be aware when buying a replacement, that even though many vendors (and forum members) call all split colour dashes 'black and linen'; there were two completely different 'cream' colours (a mushroomy Grey-beige [86-87] and a lighter Linen [88>]).

No I'm not going all black, I want to keep with the cream but the upper part of my dash is cracked above the instrument binnacle. My current colour scheme is actually cream leather with navy blue dash top, door card tops and rear cards. I've decided to go black with cream on the assumption black/cream will be easier to source than navy/cream.

How much are you looking for for a Black/Cream dash

I bought a perfect black dash recently for £15. Cheap I know, but it gives you an idea as to what you can find. Your car will be blue and Linen btw, and I will guess that its a 1989?

It's a 1991 model finished in a very pale blue which looks silver in some light and to some extent pale green in certain light conditions. It has a cream (Linen) leather interior with navy trim. I'm assuming Black/Linen would be easier to come by than Navy/Linen. Thanks for the advice on pricing Simon, very useful.

I will venture a guess that it will be extremely hard Wayne. I dont think that Ive seen that colour in a 944 at all, and I used spend a lot of time working with them.

Had you considered fitting a cheapo replacement and having your original recovered (or buying a good linen and black and having the top of that re-trimmed? outhbound trimmers have a good reputation but theyre expensive and another option would be leather, if your car has leather trim. Porsche offered this as a ferociously expensive full leather option.

Thinking of giving chips away a shout for the cracks in my 220 BROWN dash, Paul S can it be done, not deformed just a couple of splits ?

I'm guessing it will be hard to source Navy/Linen, thats why I am leaning towards changing to Black/Linen. I' hoping this colour choice will be more readily available. I don't think the lower Linen part of the dash is leather but I would need to check.

So in answer to your question Simon I'm looking at buying a good Black/Linen to replace the Navy/Linen rather than getting it recovered. To be honest it's not that bad, it's only noticeable when looking in the car through the front windscreen.

I think this is the way forward. With the huge amount of labour involved in fitting a replacement do you really want to find out after a year or two it cracks again? Blue does seem to be more prone to cracks, it was unheard of for black dashes to crack a few years ago but blue ones were having problems even then.

If you own an oval dash car it will crack over the coming years; look at how few remaining early-dash cars are crack-free and it's the same material. My thoughts would be either live with the cracks or re-cover in something like alcantara. Does anyone have any idea how much this would be? Leather kits are available for LHD cars, but surely a trimmer would be able to cut to fit easily enough? [8|]

Navy and linen thats the same as mine however im in the process of changing out my carpets for cobalt blue ones, it looks much better.
