Can scratches in glass be repaired?

Sorry off topic - not 944 related but might help others when a solution comes up. Seem to have picked up a few scratches on my rear screen on my BMW daily driver. I think form the automatic car wash [:mad:] I should have known better really.

Do the likes of Autoglass etc offer repair and has anyone had this done successfully? I see there are a few products on ebay to use but would be keen to have it looked at by a professional. Any ideas?



 
I collared an Autoglass rep at a car show and asked the same question since the rear wiper has scratched the glass on my Porsche and he stated they do not the capability to polish out scratches. I believe there are some toothpaste-like products that can be used but I've chosen not to use them since a scratch is better than a dull opaque patch on the glass if it all goes wrong.

I'll watch this thread with interest in case someone has a proven solution.

I've been tempted to try out some products for this very issue on my cars. From what I've heard, if you can feel the scratch with your finger nail, nothing will help. If not, something like this from machine mart might help:

Make sure you don't get too much heat in the glass if using any rotary-action based applications (With a rotary polisher, or drill attachments).

You can imagine why...
 
Yep - that's why I'd prefer to take it somewhere to have it done. Would hate to make the fine scratches worse..

I can just see the drill moving sideways and making a big long scratch down the bodywork [:)]
 
I had the same problem, tried all the DIY kits they were useless [:mad:]

I found a company that do it properly, they work on buses and lorrys mainly as screens are mega expensive for these

they wanted £300 per day to do the work and they seemed to think it was 1-2 days work to remove all the scratches.....so I purchased a new hatch and sold the old one.....total cost was £50

I also purchased new side glass for the doors a £40 each bargain [:D]

I have had a number of very small stone chips which I have repaired with the standard windscreen chip repair stuff from the various suppliers.
The chips were probably 1 to 2 mm in diameter and 1 mm deep - too small for the major windscreen repairers to bother with.
The repair kits I used had a free running clear liquid and clear plastic patches to place over the liquid to keep it in the chip.
After allowing time for the liquid to dry I then remove the plastic patch and remove the excess filler with a sharp razor blade. This liquid has also repaired cracks in headlamp glass successfully.
I have not used it on scratches but don't see why it would not work.

Araldite clear glue is also usable on glass and would probably work in a similar manner.
