Cambelt Change

Tim, Never done the job, but I think I paid £700 to have them replaced about two years ago. This was parts and labour, BUT also included a rear wheel bearing and chasing some odd noises in the front suspension. So, probably about £550 for just the belts. That was an indie, who insisted on using Porsche wheels, but did use aftermarket belts. It didn't include a waterpump (existing one was in good nick.) Non-Porsche parts would knock a good £100 off this. Adding in a waterpump would add about £200. I wil DIY my next one, as it can't be *that* difficult, and parts will probably only come to £80 or so. Oli.

Hi All

This question has no doubt been answered numerous times on the site, but I was wondering about changing the belts on my S2. Judging by the search I did on here, everyone here seems to do an inordinate amount of work on their car, and considering I am the least mechanically minded 944 owner to have lived, I planned to get my local indy to do it. I was just wondering if anyone had any ball park figures i should be looking at for the whole job to be done? I am not sure the belts need doing, being 4 years but only 14k miles old, but since it is taking me on a week long road trip to, from and around Le Mans Classic i thought it should be done before rather than after. If the route works as planned, the new belt is going to need re-tensioned on the way back as well!!

Thanks in advance

Cam and balance belts were scheduled at 4 years or 48K but present thinking tends to be 4 years or 36K. Check your prices as just belts should only be 150-200 but obviously adding rollers, tensioners etc increases the bill proportionally . Lots of indies have a price on their website as its a frequent job. Water pumps are 350+ to do when you are doing the belts too. I'm told water pumps often fail after a belt change as they are under more tension! Don't forget to get new belts retensioned 500-2K later (this interval seems to vary depending on who you talk to!). I've been told that belts correctly tensioned should hum a bit when running and that when the noise stops then they are too loose - I'm not sure everyone would agree with this so I'll be interested in the feedback. And don't forget the chain itself. This was never on the original Porsche maintenance plan (I believe) as they weren't supposed to fail but the do and how...... Budget the value of your car or a new engine if it snaps.

Basic job to do as long as you have tools to hand and a car lift...at least if you use a indy you should have nothining to worry about as long as there good and if something dose go wrong then you will at least have someone to point the finger at...dont forget your indy may know these cars very well and they might come across something which needs attention that the average diy man could miss...[:)]

Just had a quick look at some of the well known independants websites that list it as a menu item: [link=http://www.rpmporsche.co.uk]www.rpmporsche.co.uk[/link] - £312.79 [link=http://www.hartech.org.uk/]http://www.hartech.org.uk/[/link] - £346.63 [link=http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/]http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/[/link] - £258.50 [link=http://www.jzmachtech.com/]http://www.jzmachtech.com/[/link] - £509.95 All prices incluiding VAT for an S2

Its interesting how the indies are charging these days [8|]. I assume the most expensive one 'know' what they do and therefore takes more hours [;)] (or they just charge more on hourly rate?). Almost double!

Thanks for all the posts and useful advice, my chosen indy was one of the ones that Paul put up (I probably should have done the same search myself really) and the price quoted seems about right in light of the comparisons (assuming the rollers and tensioners etc. that David mentioned come with it!). Thanks again, anyone goign to Le Mans classic this year, am sure it is on another post, just thought i would ask whilst i am here!

Hi David. Just had my belts done today. (Local independent). They told me to go back for re-tensioning when the humming stops. That said, I thought I read something on here about this being wrong and crazy though, so not sure if that really helps you! Tim - the price on the website quoted for the belt job was £150 (inc parts and labour). Final bill was £600 (!), but that included some other bits and pieces too. (See my recent topic). The rollers are pretty pricey it turns out - around £30 each, and there are 5 or 6 of them... Giles

ORIGINAL: rcsalmons Euro-car-parts and a lift gives you no advantage as you do it from the top! Rich
Having a lift made realeasing the starter motor, locking the fly wheel and undoing the main crank pully very easy as your not climbing around under the car on your back and you can get a decent leaver on the pully bolt...
