I don't have any proof that they've been done in the last 5 years so putting 2 and 2 together and thinking I could tackle this. I'm reasonably competent with spanners and a hammer! Has anyone else had a go at this? If so, how long did it take and given the importance of it, should I just leave it to the experts?!
 
Easy, and well worth doing. I did it on the road in about an hour. The plastic was broken on mine when I looked at it, and hanging on by a thread.
Get a small torque wrench that reads down to (IIRC) 10Nm. The main dangers are stripping a thread, or dropping one of the crush washers into the sump.
The J-tube that feeds oil into the tensioner is also known to fail, so you may want to replace that while you're at it.

You don't need to break the fuel lines to remove the cam cover. Replacing the gaskets is a sensible 'while you're in there' job if they've not been recently replaced.

The main reason to get an expert to do it, is not because it's difficult, but because they can appraise the state of the chain and cam sprockets and if necessary, replace the chain which requires removing the cams.

 
I totaly agree with all of the above.It's an easy job to do even changing the chain is not hard.As long as you are ok with the spanners then there is no reason why you wouldn't do it your self.
 
As others have said, it's really not hard. A fiddle, and worth making a little U-shaped bit of coat-hanger wire to keep the adjuster closed, but you can do it within an hour if you get on with it.

Ace! I was hoping you guys would say that! Next question is....any guides or pointers or does the rennlist post describe it pretty well?

Trouble is I'm a real pictures guy so don't traditionally follow written instructions very well!! [:D]
 
It really is desperately simple. I don't think you need instructions at all.

Decent 1/4inch drive socket set, some screwdrivers and a spare hour or so. You'll be fine.
