I'm looking for a fair quote for getting the cam belt and tensioners done, also while were at it the cam chain and runners.

So what's a good price from my local indy?

Anyone had it done with any advice ?

Most gratefully received.

Gerry

Belts are cheap. Gates & Conti ones available. What comes to chain, rumor has it, Opel/Vauxhal Omega-Senator straight six chain is the same, so you can save few £ on that. Only tensioner plastic parts must be bought from Porsche. What comes to labor, it is relatively easy job to do.

Thanks for that Olli, so if I budget for 5 hours work at £60ph (about the going rate here) and parts at £150, I'm looking at £450 all in...

Any more than that Tom & I might have a go ourselves.

Problem is the car will be raced the following week, so we need to be comfortable that it won't implode on us.

Chain tension pads are a 928 part.Porsche shop used to sell them separatly for a couple of pounds. If you have ever changed the cam belt etc on any other car then have a go yourself. There are a couple of very good tutorials on you tube . one by an american chap on a turbo and one by a german guy on an S2.If you have a bottle of tipex and a bit of time and common sense then its not hard to do.

Like the sound of the titorials, should be able to get the hang of it.[:)]
Good lad. A lot of people view changing the belts on 944's as being a black art; Olli and Colin are spot on when they say it's not hard. An engine lock is helpful, as is a balance belt pulley spanner, but neither are essential.

The bolt on the end of the camshaft holding the cam pulley defeated me, and you need to remove that to change the cam chain. It's a 12-point spline tool, and I snapped one off in the bolt and badly twisted another. That aside, there is nothing difficult about the job.

Oli.

Gerry, Have a chat with Kevin at EMC, if you're racing the car then yu'll want to make sure that the timing is set properly and thast where the dark art appears to be. You can lose a lot of horses with screwed up timing.

Good luck to you and Tom for this year, i may see you at a race or 2 but the beetle isnt making an appearance this year... so its just spectating

Also if you are checking the cam chain and it and the teeth on the cams are ok ,but you want to change the pad you don't need to remove the chain or the cams. You simply remove the oil feed pipe to the tensioner and compress it then use a bent paper clip to hold it closed remove and change the pad without moving or touching anything else.
