Buzzing noise from under the passenger side dash

I'm finding out that my car really doesn't like cold weather!!

The gearbox doesn't like changing into second or reverse until warm, lots of new rattles in the cabin until its warmed up etc but the strangest is a buzzing that comes from under the passenger foot well where all the electrics are.

When i switch the ignition on the buzzing starts. It sounds like an electric motor buzzing away and if i poke my head under there when the engine is running i can still hear it!! It has never made the noise before, it only started when the temp started to drop off the other week.

Does anyone know whet the hell it might be?

My cab used to make a rapid clicking noise which was due to a dirty door plunger switch.

Mine buzzez too, i went digging! it seems to come from the ECU! I came to the conclusion it was just a transformer or a relay making noise?! it still works so i just put it all back!
Mine also struggles to go in to 2nd when its cold, I tried a lucas oil additive which helped a bit, it makes the oil stick to the gears better on first movement so it gets round the box quicker (or so they say). Its sold on Ebay amongst other places!

It was this oil stuff

Thanks for the info chaps. The buzzing does seem to be coming from one of the 'brains' under there. Everything seems to work as it should so whatever it is, it isnt afecting the running of the car at all.

Im going to change the oil in the gearbix and see if that helps with the gear changing issue. It was a total pig to get into first this morning as well but it was damn cold and icey out there at 6am[&:]

yep I'd second that as favourite.

the relay is just behind the glovebox with the fuses and the clicking sounds like it is coming from the pass floorwell area
Try removing the interior light fuse and see if the clicking stops

Hmm, its not a rapid clicking noise at all but a buzzing like an electric motor. But il certainly check the door pins etc to see if thats the problem.

Thanks,
Stu

no need to fart around with the switches just remove the fuse ? it will stop the noise instantly if its the door switches at fault .

It doesn't sound like it is from your description

Did anyone find out what this was? I seem to have this whirring sound like an electric motor or fan on very low. Seemed to start after i put a new head unit in... Comes from underneath the glove compartment. And starts as soon as I turn ignition key to first click.

Mines the same when the key is in position 1, it sounds like a small electric fan or something.

The fan does run at a low level with the key on 1, even if it's set to "0" on the dial. Mine irritates me if I'm waiting in the car, i can turn the key halfway to "off" and it stops the fan without turning the radio off.

There is also a little sucky fan under there with a thermister which monitors cabin temp. It's connected by a tube to the round slatted vent next to the cigarette lighter. It can sometimes groan as it gets older. Well worth cleaning up too as they are often filthy!

Am I right in thinking this is S2/turbo only? I'm sure was a blank vent on the lux I had (oval-dash).

Not sure Paul. I know there are 3 thermisters in the mixture control system on my car. I assumed all oval dashes were the same. If you had a blank there it would suggest that not to be the case!

There is another thermister under the bonnet, drivers side, next to blower box intake and the other is located inside the middle air vent inside the cabin for what it's worth, but that's another subject from this thread!

Is this a big job to do? How does the fan come out?

My '89 Lux has the little sucky thing and vent.

Has yours got the "climate control" dial, with the temperature numbers rather than just blue to red? I guess that's the cars that have the vent actually doing anything.

This in an old thread! Oli will remember the outcome.... he's been around these parts forever.... [:)]
Git! You're making me sound old, but I think I'm younger than you!

[]

(Just realised, my sig isn't going to help this.)

Oli.
