Hi im new here, im only 21 and im about to buy my first porsche 944, i have a 924 when i first passed my driving test, but i always loved the agressive stance of the 944 with the wider arches, my main reason for posting this thread is to find out what the wheels are that are on the car, can any one tell me?

Hi and Welcome Matthew,
They're made by Avez (called the 'Avez A') if I remember correctly, they were quite popular a few years ago but I've not seen any for ages.

i personaly think that the suit the car down to a T, thay have made the car for me, can you recomend any "cheap" lol insurance comapnys, and is there still the whole tax exempt thing? just the car is a 1983, surely a classic now?!

I agree, they really do set the car off nicely. Car looks great, any more details?

There's been a few threads about insurance here recently, I'd recommend doing a search (but limit the timescale as it's a bit cantankerous if you don't!).

Bad news about the Tax exempt status though, they scrapped it before our cars became eligable []

Hi Mattie. I've never seen those wheels on a 944 but I've seen a few on wide bodied Turbo 911's. Very unusual and I do think they set the car off nicely.

In the early editions of 911 and Porsche World there was a project 944 that they did where they fitted these wheels (and a running report car too), I think both cars where black. I've got some scanning to do for work over the weekend so I'll see if I can find the article.

This was taken stright from the auto trader site, but give most of the info

2 Doors, Manual, Coupe, Petrol, 142,000 miles, Metallic Guards Red. Electric seats, Immobilizer, PAS, Sports Interior, Alloy wheels, Anti theft system, Body kit, Electric windows, Electrically adjustable seats, Radio, Full Service History. Insurance Group:18, Immaculatly Presented Classic Porsche 944 Coupe, Drives And Looks Superb.

I can't see any evidence of a bodykit? (which is a good thing! [;)]). It doesn't even look like it has a lower rear valance, so it's as it would have come out of the factory, which is nice.

I'm sure it's insurance group 20 and not 18, but that's hardly anything to worry about. As usual make sure you check the service history for the belts having been done recenty.

the car has a massive folder full of recipts for work undertaken, theres loads of things in there lol

i would be using this as a daily driver and i was just wondering what sort of mpg it would be returning, i have a 50mile round trip to work and back

Should be able to achieve near to 30MPG if driven "normally".

Hey mattie, im I got my 944 last year (23) I went with adrian flux for insurance. Wouldnt say it was cheap but they didnt laugh at me like a few others did when I said I was getting a Porsche, neither did they recommend I get a Ford Fiesta which IMO is a major plus. I do a 20 mile round trip every day and get over 30mpg.

Edit: Its a trip round a few bypasses so cruising mostly plus 10 mins or so of traffic.

I have had my 944S for 2 weeks, and use it everyday for work. Not had chance to work out the average MPG yet as I haven't filled the tank up to the top yet, but it isn't much worse than my Ford SportKA, which I have just sold . Have been busy purchasing the little bits and bobs that need replacing in the interior and will be fitting them this week.

I love Porsche and really enjoy driving it!

If its the one for sale in selby i would think twice as £3995 is top money for an 83 car and also the interior is not standard as it is fitted with an oval dash which wasnt avalible till 1986 plus it looks like the clocks are out of a 944 turbo as they appear to be fitted with a boost gauge ??.Its a conversion that can be done but is quite dificult to get just right and involve's joining the wiring loom etc which needs to be done correctly !!

Mixed traffic (shopping, driving to work, some stop-start) I get 26mpg out of my S2, so a lux should be better than that.
On a long run at steady speeds 32mpg ish is normal. Stick to 70mph and drive really carefully and you can see 36mpg on a long run!!!

Very valid comments.

Strange as it may seem my preference is for the semi unloved car. You get an honest feel of what you have, or perhaps more accurately, what you don't have.

It is the old thing of buying a "restored" repainted old car. It will look fabulous when you buy it but could look a rusting wreck in 6 months. If a car hasn't been mucked about with you can see what was lurking under the paint.

You need to know much more about a non standard car. If a car has been changed in any way you need to tell your insurers as they may decide you haven't got cover, after all, just when you need it most. It also knocks on if anything goes wrong as getting spares can be more difficult. They may not be listed relative to the age of the car and you may not be able to source a replacement.

Modifications are fine if you are doing them yourself as you know what you have done, and how. If buying a modified car you also have to take into consideration the quality of the work in carrying out the modification.

I would steer clear of a modified car as your first 944. Get a standard one first and get to know the car. If, after a time, you want something a bit more special you should then know enough not to get taken in by a complete lash up.

I wouldn't jump on an '83 unless you have explored all the other options.

If it has an oval dash on that year, as suggested above, I wouldn't touch it.

1987 model year Lux is perhaps the best of the lot, or an 89 if you can get one. 88 is less desirable as the compression was lowered which dropped the power but other than that, obviously, has all the advantages of the '87. Up until 87 there were significant refinements and improvements, year on year, over the earlier models and certainly worth having if you can find a later car.

so you are saying not to touch this one for my first 944, i never new about the dash conversion and i think this is a valid reason to walk away from this

The later dash doesnt not fit properly and will have been adapted to fit so personally i would walk away from it as there will be better cars at more resonable prices seeing as its way overpriced to start with .
