Buying a late model 933

Hi Everyone out there!

I'm a nubie and have spent years denying myself the pleasures of a 911 (wrong image I thought...) but having tried everything else, I've given in!

I'm sure this isn't a new question but could anyone point me in the right direction regarding the purchase of a late 933 C4 manual? i.e. what to look out for? good options, bad options?

I also plan the odd trackday so would also appreciate any steers for realistic improvements - in particular, suspension and brakes.

Thanks in advance.

Hello David and welcome. There's a 993 buyer's guide in the Jan-04 edition of "911 & Porsche World" magasine - its quite good. I bought mine back in July but didn't know enough about the car to make a judgement so I paid a main dealer to check the car over. It only cost £150 to do so.

Thanks for the post Barry. Much appreciated. Bit of a dumb question but where could I get the mag? I've never seen anything like it in a WH Smith.

My local newsagent stocks it but if yours doesn't you can ask them to order it. However, they'll only be stocking the Feb edition now. You can order back issues from:

https://baden.ipl.co.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?nextform=/chp/backissues.html&mag=pwo

http://www.chpltd.com/911_porsche_world/

You need the Jan-04 edition. Hope this helps.

Hi David

Harrys brother here.

993, a good choice, certainly one of the best looking Porsches made (Just my opinion)
Done many a mile in both C2 and the last C4S to be registered in the UK which my father in law bought new out of Lindbrook in 98. He sold it much to my dismay( Didn't speak to him for a week or two)

A good investment I recon particularly the S

Happy hunting and if I can help in the mean time please shout.
Dont forget the Kent area meet at Wrotham, second Wednesday in the month.

Nice to hear from you Lee. Perhaps we could meet up? I'm very new to all this and I'm currently doing my homework before I buy - so any experience you can pass on... Harry's got my number if you want to give me a buzz.

David, I did an awful lot of driving many cars from many dealers to get a feel for what was "good" and what was "bad" - after 5 or 6 you get to know eg if the clutch is biting high / on it's way out or if it has stiffened / lowered suspension. Go for what you like and buy the best you can afford. Take every opportunity to test drive, even if you don't like the colour! You'll get to know what you like.

Maurice has provided loads of good stuff, but just be aware of what you have driven before and what you are using the car for. I have never found understeer a problem with my C4, although I'm sure if I drive it fast enough into a corner I might find it!

Maurice, one point though, OPC's are now using semi-synthetic oil on 993's ..... a bit thicker so less chance of an oil leak! Could you explain the LHD better driving position too. Ta.

I bought from a main dealer for the security / warranty, but Maurice is right, still be wary. My experience is that they are just second hand car dealers trying to get the best price so be as wary as you would anywhere else.

Given the summer we've just had, you should definitely consider air con. Mine also came with Sports Seats which I wasn't really concerned about when hunting, but they definitely look better. 52k miles and still on the same shocks ... servicing has not raised any issues with them or suggested replacing. 17" cups go without saying.

Apart from that, happy hunting and don't forget the most important thing. Histories usually only go missing for one reason. No history, think long and hard about buying it .... but definitely test drive it !

Would be great to meet up some time.... If you can spare the time and get down to the Moat at Wrotham on this wed 11th then let me know and I'll make an extra special effort and get on down there myself. (I tend to hibernate in the winter)

I've not been since the summer but they do get a good turn out of cars and there's obviously a lot of knowledgeable guys there who'll talk Porsche till the cows come home but don't let that put you off...

See you soon

( if its not gonna be a daily driver the get an RS)
