Buying a 930 Turbo - what to look out for?

My first post since joining the PCGB. Considering buying a 930 and would be grateful if anyone can share any advice on what to look out for when buying? Are there areas susceptible to rust, engine problems, oil leaks, etc?

Are there any experts that can help?

hi, superb car I'm sure John Ward will be along to give you some direction. However for my input rust is a major to look for. Usual places kidney bowls, floor etc . Have a look over on impactbumpers.com and search rust,the guys over there have detailed areas that are problematic and show how to check and approx costs to get sorted. If I recall the kidney bowl replacements are approx £1500/ side as you have to cut door jamb area to access

Having owned several turbos since 1975, i have recently returned to a 3.3 with 330bhp from factory

Don't get tempted into a v low mileage proposition without checking the head studs thoroughly.........if any gone u will hear them rattle ...............however they do corrode ,especially, with lack of use beware may not immediately be apparent

Any 930 potentially has all the issues that afflict any 911, and a search of the 'net will bring most of them to light, and give you an idea of what they might cost to rectify, preferably by a specialist with a good reputation.

Many 911 buyers/owners find that it would have been better to have spent the extra money up front on a better car, rather than buying the cheaper rolling resto type option..... I have singularly failed to follow this option several times, much to the detriment of my wallet.

Given the amount that it is possible to spend whilst acquiring a 930 nowadays, unless you have a considerable amount of expertise yourself, a pre purchase inspection by someone who knows their 930s inside out would almost certainly be a wise investment.

There are not that many out there to choose from - best of luck with your search..... get a good one and you'll love it; get a half decent one and you will still love it.

Get a bad one ( they do exist!), then provided that you bought it at the right price, you can spend the rest of your budget resurrecting one of the very best sports cars of all time to your own requirements - factory standard as specified in the cars Certificate of Authenticity would generally be the preferred option.

Buy one you are willing to drive on the track, not one to polish, take to the pub and otherwise hide away in storage facility.

Driving a sorted 930 hard is simply ....

Sorry lost for words. Just drive one, hard.

That is the same on any old car.

You want one that has been looked after money spent each year.Condition not miles,low miles big bill will follow.

A 930 can eat up 25k + very fast.

 
Errr I like to to polish mine and like to take it to the pub and also like to hide it away but not in a storage facility!

Also like taking it to Le Mans so not completely sad

Just work out your budget and then double it! buy the best you can't afford and enjoy

 
Get it checked out and get it checked out, can't say it enough, there are lots of superficially tidy cars out there, with prices high it pays unscrupulous garages to 'tart up' a very poor example and charge good money for them. They aren't cheap to keep in good shape but are tremendous fun.

I just used Classic Retrofit to update some of the electrics, helped a lot.

 
Owned mine for 6 years now, I possibly bought at the right time. Car was inspected before I bought it, only a couple of issues which I negotiated down on price. Then.... once driving it regulary the issues appeared, top end rebuild, broken studs burnt valves, 3LDZ turbo let go whilst playing with a Diablo, good fun. got a K27 fitted. Gearbox rebuild due 3rd gear grind, Alternator replace, wheel bearings etc etc. Paint work and rust repaired. So 6 years on and still spending. New brakes this year followed by suspension refresh. All in all great car but are a bit of a money pit depending on your standards. I have put about 15 K in so far.

These cars are big money today, not sure how long it will last. Buy what you want but don't buy as an investment. Drive the car and be rewarded

I don't know what happened there, I copied and pasted an excel file and it looked good on the reply but seemed to get a bit mixed up in cyber space! still bottom line still the same total cost inc road tax, insurance and petrol £84,395
