Bulb/Fuze/diagnonsis please

2002 Carrera C4S - a week or two ago the dip beam was reluctant to come on without a few attempts on the switch - a side light bulb was out - replaced this and all good again - tonight the clocks would not illuminate (digital read outs ok though) - I had a look for blown bulbs (thinking the car is maybe flagging up a problem to me?) and found the rear plate lights blown - does the car have a fault alert pattern that is telling me something or are all things electrical just going wrong? Any ideas please.
 
The number plate light an instrument cluster lights share the same fuse. Try a new fuse, but if lighting gremlins continue, I would suggest changing the main light switch and ignition switches. DIYs for both are in the Technical Articles section.
 
Further to that - the initial problem I mentioned re the side light being out and the dip beam being reluctant to come on - is this a built in indicator that a bulb is out or likely that my headlight switch is on its way out - for info the replacement bulb seemed to have sorted this hence my question.
 
Reluctance for the headlights to come on is a sure-fire indication that the main headlight switch is on the way out. I would do it straight away, as you don't want a situation that one of our members (John Ware) found himself in, where the headlights went out whilst driving on a dark country road! The ignition switch is a common problem too, and at less than £20 worth doing while you are in there. Get one of the Hella ones though - there are a lot of cheapie Chinese ones about that are rubbish.
 
A bit confused now - I have the rear no. plate lights out - they are recieving power but only enough to faintly show the filament glowing orange - no light as such is produced. I have checked the fuze and even changed it for the spare (fuse A5) and no improvement. Any thoughts? Regarding new switches why won't they clean up - can they be cleaned up or does something breakdown within it?
 
I don't think you can get the switch apart to repair it. Up to you, but if it was me I would get a new switch, and then investigate the number plate lights. Changing the switch may well fix the problem.
 
Yep, advice taken, part ordered at £97 - thats the headlight switch - though I am not following with the ignition switch - can't see it listed either? Does this have any impact upon the lighting issues or just co located and easy to change whilst I am in there? Thanks for your help Richard, very much appreciated.
 
It is just that you have to take the vent out to change the light switch, and the ignition switch is right behind it. Fiddly to do, so because it seems to be just the light switch, maybe leave it alone then.
