Brake Calipers

All quotes are back and Im not that upset by them . Infact I feel very positive about the future of my S2. It felt great when I first got her and now I cant wait to drive her again with all the bits sorted and with proper shoes on.

One question - Brake calipers are being overhauled - Would I be considered a "Chav" if I had them powder coated a different colour ?
 
I did ask about Burberry unfortunately they could only do Mulberry. The other option was to have a reflective coating put on them so the blue neons would glow in the dark.
 
There's a lot of people go for red powdercoat so you won't be out of place. Get it done well though or they turn pink. You'll also need to keep on top of cleaning them or they'll soon be black again. I stuck with black because I am lazy [:)]

And I'm changing from red to black because "Big Blacks" are :p...... I should have them powder coated red really as "Big Reds" are worth more. [:D]

I agree with Paul on the cleaning front. They look great when they are first done but can you be bothered to take off the hand brake and move th car 4" to clean the callipers every time you clean the car? [:mad:]

Personally I don't like coloured brake callipers as I consider them to be like household radiators or drain pipes - a necessary but unattractive component that should be coloured to make it blend win with the background rather than contrast to catch the eye. It's personal taste though. Even for me silver might actually be less noticeable even than the black I have.

You'll not be into my use of chrome radiators as a design element then [:)]

Actually I am - we have something similar in our bathroom in fact. I should have specified the normal radiator with the vertical depressions in the front that most rooms have.

I may also be swayed by decorative chrome callipers too then I guess, but perhaps the 92" wheels required would cause issues with handling.
 
I sort of agree with Fen - I think the calipers should only be red if they are actually big reds (but I suppose red painted big blacks are acceptable). I hate seeing people describe calipers on ebay as big reds just because they are red when they are not real big reds. I must admit though I do like calipers in yellow but would never dream of painting them yellow.

I agree though it is a pain in the backside if there is a wheel spoke in the way of the caliper. I took the opportunity this weekend of giving them a bit of a clean whilst I had the wheels off checking things over in preparation for Bedford.

Its possible to refurb the 4-pot Porsche/ Brembo callipers yourself. I've done it on my car and the brakes are still really strong nearly two years later.

Depends how good/experienced a mechanic you are. The parts (stainless anti wear plates, piston kits and seals) are all available for a refurb. Your callipers are not really likely to be "totally shot" maybe one or two pistons can be replaced on each calliper, the plate lift corrosion dealt with and a new set of seals and a lick of paint and they will be strong brakes again!
 
Also try RPM 01296 661881, although I don't know where you are in the country. I'm sure pretty much any specialist would be offering the service as it's a common fault.

Motortune in Jockland did our S2 ~ from memory four new discs, pads and full refurb of 4xcallipers came to around £500 ? (it was part of a bigger bill [&:] )
 
Just taken mine to RPM in Herts (ask for Ollie) - they will also powder coat your calipers too. The allen screws holding the plates were so corroded on mine that I required specialist help.

I see you are not a member (so sign-up [;)]), but there is an ad at the back of last months Porsche Post based in NW. They will do a complete refurb for about £200+ each on 4-pots.
