Boxster start up

Hello everyone.

This is my first posting to this forum so hope I do it right! Just become the proud owner of a 1999 vintage Boxster- love it. I am worried about one thing. After the car has been standing for a while ,like overnight, when I rev the car reasonable hard just after start (yes I know I shouldn't but I have a hill to get up!) I get a burst of smoke from the exhaust. Doesn't happen when the car is warm. I am told this is normal with Boxster- any comments anyone? If I have serious trouble brewing I can get it fixed under guarrentee ,I hope!

Perfectly normal on a boxster - I actually quite like it as it gives the neighbours something to watch ;)

This is a characteristic of the flat-6 engine....don't worry at all, my 10-month old MY03 does it.
 
Yup, 'tis a common trait. As long as it isn't a lot of smoke, a few whisps or a pocket when you fire the ignition (This is when mine does it most), then you should be o.k.
 
I was at Porsche Reading a few weeks back and a rep fired up an 04 in the showroom.....clouds of white smoke.

Funny, my 02 never smokes. Is this normal and should I take it back to have the smoke option fitted ?

It is a characteristic of any horizontally opposed engine layout (the so called boxer configuration). Air-cooled VW's do exactly the same.

The popular explanation is that if a piston is on the induction stroke when it comes to rest the pressure in it's cylinder will equalise by sucking air past the piston rings. This can bring a small amount if oil with it which is what gets burnt off when you start up.

However I haven't found a Subaru owner who will admit it.

I have experienced the same cloud of smoke a couple of times from cold start on 4,000m 2.7 car. I first thought of broken rings..or worse!!

Then a friend with a 2 month old 2.7 told me he had the same frightening experience. When he rang his supplying OPC they told him it was the intercooler or turbo!!!!! and it "can happen" which did not exactly inspire confidence.. When my friend told the person that Boxsters do not have turbos there was a short silence...(got a clever one here!!!)

My BMW Boxer flat twin bike sends a cloud of smoke from the left silencer if I leave it parked on the side stand...ie. leaning over to the left...the oil settles in the left tappet cover and it is sucked into the combustion chamber through the valve guides..but I have no catalytic converter to worry about there! Should I try SAE 90 oil???!!!
I have not tried parking the Boxster at a 45% angle to see if it does the same thing...on it's prop stand!
 
My 03 white smokes like this when cold - but only if I turn on the ignition and start immediately like every other car I have ever had. If I turn on the ignition and then wait about 5 seconds before starting (to the sound of all sorts of brring clonking noises presumably from the fuel system pressurising) there is absolutely no smoke at all - and it starts smoothly rather than rather roughly. Try it somebody - is it just mine?
