Boxster prices

As a long standing owner of Porsches at present have a 993 but I have seen this Boxster spyder 550 and was wondering what you owners feel about is a fair price .April 2004 Tiptronic 3k miles all the usual spec related to this special limited edition Have phoned a few dealers and opc and the value the car to buyin about £35k the seller is looking for £40 which I thing is way to dear let me have your views please

[&o]Wait isn't that long I was quoted by PC Hatfield a Feb 05 build on a Boxster "S" just 24 hours ago! Certainly a better financial bet IMO than paying £5K over the trade price for a used 550 that isn't as good a driver as the latest version is going to prove to be

£40k seems a bit lower than the advertised prices you see at OPCs. However, a private seller can't offer you dealer facilities such as trade-in, finance etc although the car will still be under warranty. Given that, I would a have thought a compromise around £38.5k would be reasonable given the time of year. Try speccing a 987 to the 550's spec and frighten yourself with the price!

[]I can't see 280bhp on the 550 option pack [8D] As the buyer of my last Boxster said refs my next one ... stick as close to list price and only add essentials that are worth the money come resale time he quoted: Wind Deflector..Met Paint... Speaker Upgrade...Full Leather ... after that you and your money are going to go seperate ways

Thank's guys for all you comment's ..but I still feel that this car is worth no more than £36k and it still has 18 months warranty on it ..As for buying a new car I am still going to loose a packet even though there is a waiting list for the car and as I want a tiptronic which is an extra the dealers say when you go to sell it no one want's them and you will get less for your car ..you are in a no win situation

Just out of interest I've added up the cost of the standard equipment on a 550 which would be extras on the 987. Some things like painted seat backs are apparently no longer available and I ignored things like the sports suspension bits and the one-off items on the 550 such as different door entry guards, instrument bezels etc.

Add that to the £38720 for a 987 S and you're fast approaching £46k which makes a used tiptronic (extra £1758.98) 550 at £38ish reasonable value.

As for the extra 14 bhp, I take your point about it not being on the option list but in the real world I think the difference it will make is pretty marginal.

[]Ian until I drove the 987"S" I would have totally agreed with your view on "pretty marginal" but having driven the new car for over an hour today I can say the "on road real world experience" is far greater than the "on paper hard facts and figures suggest."

I have had 4 Boxsters since it's launch back in 1996 and each one was an improvement over the previous example, and todays 80% new 987 confirmed this trend continues at a greater pace now than ever before. The 550 was excellent value for money as you rightly point out but when I was offered one I declined for 2 reasons. After 4 Boxsters I really wanted something "new" and also a lot of the 550 kit, including the special GT Silver colour would not have been my 1st choice.

Never having driven the 987 S I accept your opinion on the performance. I have to agree that GT silver metallic wasn't my 1st choice of colour but I was seduced by the "standard" kit on the 550 and the fact that it was my first brand new Porsche.

My 550 is my 3rd Boxster and I can't see at this stage that I would have another one, even a 987. Next time (according to Mrs G that's a long way off!) I think I'd try and make the leap to a 997 or get a BMW or Audi as a second car with an older Porsche (944 turbo or 968) as a high days and holidays car. The last time we had a 2nd and 3rd car was when we had an Audi S3 and a 944 S2 - the Porsche we've loved the most out of the 7 we've had.

The brutal fact is that 986 prices have taken a humping with the new model and the 550 isn't holding its value much better than a standard 'S' - so as painful as it sounds to 550 owners, your offer of £36K is probably about correct for this time of year - in spring it might be £1K more. Make the offer, let them refuse, in the cold light of January when no-one is buying and their 18 month warranty is now down to 16 months or less and time is marching on, then they will call you back and accept.

Although I do agree with others, phone around every single OPC in the country and you will find a boxster build in early spring - I'm sure of it, and I think the depreciation would be no more than a 550. I still see the 550 has a long way downward to go yet, and will settle at around £500-£1K more than a similarly specced 986S.

Greig saw that one advertised ..It is not a true 550 car ,only one speced up to it ,and it has to be gaytronic for me darling.there i'm out of the closet. See you at the body shop on Sat with the rest of them from the salon[][]

there is a 550 in the guildford OPC - dunno what they are looking for for it - loads of Boxsters there at the mo so may be negotiable.
I was offered April on new car if ordered today.

Phoned the opc ..car has been sold it was a 04 plate for £42. 995 way to dear considering when you call them and say you have a car with the same spec to sell how much will you bid I was told £35k I though Dick Turpin was dead .thanks for your interest.

I think that 38K is at the max end now for a private 550. I have seen several dealer 550's for 40-41K
there is no doubt that the 987 has/is having an impact on residuals. for what it's worth whilst agreeing with Rob in relation to the 280bhp, speaking from experience I feel that in terms of quality the 550 is a half way house between the outgoing 986 and the 987. I felt that my 550 was very well finished inside (considerably better than my pre facelift S) excellent natural leather with immaculate stitching complemented with a better short shift gearchange,better engine note than my previous S, and a small power increase. Quality wise I felt there was something of the 987 in the 550 even though the 550 is based upon the 986.
If I was in your shoes at this moment in time I would go for a new 987.

Average Boxster depreciation is around £5K a year. Fits in with this as its around 75% of £5K they are offering you less than you paid retail and you have had the car for 9 months. Ask for another £500. This would make it fit the math perfectly. With no purchase from them though they may say no.
