BOXSTER CONFUSION

Yours has the M96/25 engine. Up to engine number 61.504715 had the smaller IMS bearing, which although obsolete can be changed/upgraded by removing the transmission only. From engine number 61.504716 a larger IMS bearing was fitted, and cannot be removed without stripping the engine.

I guess this issue is highly likely to come up again, and again, and again,.....

Now Richard has been able to bottom this issue can his post be logged somewhere for easy future reference by others?

Thanks Richard, as i said i went to autofarm yesterday but they didnt have the info you have just posted which by coincidence i found myself last night on a website in Australia belonging to Autohaus and they gave the same engine no.s you have .Autofarm showed me a collection of small bearings all with failure but they had no larger bearing failures .My engine no. is 61505543 so from what you say has the larger bearing and to your knowledge have there been many failures of those
Many thanks Bob

The info comes from the workshop manual, so I am surprised that Autofarm didn't have the details - after all, they specialise in these things. I've extracted a bit of the manual and marked it up with notes at the bottom.

I've never hear of an IMS bearing failure in a 2.7 with the larger bearing. IMO it is the most trouble free of the M96 engines. If I were you, I would forget about it and get on and enjoy the car.

Hi Richard,
thanks for your positive input i was a bit surprised with Autofarm not having that info but moving on i feel a whole happier now i know that
Regards Bob

All good news Bob about your Ims bearing.
No need to worry so you can enjoy your car now with a little more peace of mind.
For future info why not try our mechanical Technical advisor Steve Winter At Jaz he has a wealth of knowledge which is why we took him onboard.
Many thanks to Richard for taking time getting it sorted he also is very knowledgeable and ever helpful.
