Bought an S2

" A nice looking car for 2,000 " . Its nice to see folk being so positive.

Usually folk here will love to point out that thereads no such thing as a cheap 944.
( and they do have a point lol) I have lost track of how many times I have argued that you 'can' get quite a good 944 cheap. Mind you I gave your one a miss.
Hope you prove my decision wrong [;)]

Enjoy the project

That list of jobs does not sound to bad, where abouts are you? I am in Colchester just of Berechurch Hall Rd
I don't profess to be any expert but if you want to meet up for a chat give me a call 07920589750
Likewise, although I am probably a bit far away in East London.

Happy to give an opinion and a helping hand with some of the jobs tho'.

Oli.

If battery is good slow starting could be starter motor, mines def lazy but still works fine.

Transmission whine, rear wheel bearings can manifest as tranny whine, mine had no play but one was shot making noise, worth checking as wheel bearing much cheaper then gearbox rebuild.

That's the worry. It does only sound when the car is in gear and the clutch is not depressed, which makes me fear it's transmission. This would be ideal, but I expect something more serious knowing my luck. That's where an experienced set of eyes and ears might help with diagnosis! It can't hurt trying the suggestion in the link though.

I've already dropped BrianJ a PM, but I'll be at the Helmingham show, either in the the public carpark or possibly showing with the non-club lot the other side of the road. An ideal chance for me to take advantage of you guys by getting you to take a look around it......

I've had a search and found a few threads, but has anyone around the Essex/Suffolk area had the sills replaced in the past year or 2? If yes, how much did it cost and wear did you have it done, was it a specialist or just a local garage? I have a few places I've used before for other cars, and a friend recently had some relatively cheap welding and spraying done in Ipswich.

Well done for taking the plunge Chris [:)]

I must say at that price, I'm glad it's you and not me, but I don't like to get my hands too dirty these days I just want to drive the thing with everything working and lots of shininess. You went into it with your eyes open and wanting to get stuck in so I'm sure you'll do allright, especially with the offers of help.

If you want to keep the car long term then do the bodywork properly and don't scrimp. Any rust left behind will just rear it's ugly head sooner rather than later. No point paying too little to do a job twice [:mad:]

If you are thinking of having the wheels refurbed then any good company will sort the dents out to look like new

Just seen the pics Chris, if it's just bits and bobs that need doing then I reckon you got a bargain for £2k, looks nice [;)]

Provided the transmission doesn't need a rebuilt! Gear changes are fine, just a whine, so hope it's nothing too serious. Sills and a bit of wing rust are the other potential money drainer. Apart from that, I'm looking forward to bit of spare money and time to get stuck into it.

Chris,

Mine has had a whine for about 5 years, never got any worse always put it down to transmission and like yours only does it when clutch not depressed.
I thought it might be thrust bearing?? although had a new clutch, but then at certain speeds it defiantley sounds like a wheel bearing

I have to say guys, I am feeling a lot better about the car since I started this thread. I'm now thinking the transmission whine is not terminal, the turnover is just the way it is, and all the jobs I've listed can be relatively easily ticked off. Now I just need someone to tell me that the sills repair won't bankrupt me and I'll be able to sleep at night again!

My transmission always whined but never went wrong, likewise the turnover was a bit slow because of compression and starter-motor age, but it always started!

Having driven the car to work today, I've updated the list of jobs to do:-

* Noisy fuel pump.
* Corroded fuel line.
* Faulter sender.
* Bonnet struts need replacing.
* Bonnet release handle broken
* Rear wiper does not work.
* Occasional brake squeak.
* 2 tyres with slight side wall cracks.
* Brake pad sensors need checking as light is on.
* Occasional squeal (like a fan belt) when pulling heavily away, such as up a hill in 2nd.
* Transmission whine.
* Passenger door lock does not work.
* Occasional noise/knocking on acceleration when steering.
* Some lacquer peeling on bumper and rear passenger wing.
* Sunroof seals could be changed.
* Scruffy alloys need a refurb.
* Pitted brake discs (passed MOT though).
* Rust at bottom of front wings.
* Bad sill repairs, could do with new sills.
* Small bit of rust on drivers side sill.
* Lots of old, redundant wiring to strip out.
* Windscreen aerial probably not working.
* Electric aerial fitting but not working.
* Another aerial fitted to roof.
* Exhaust chrome cover damaged.
* Some switches are worn so you can't see what they are for.

The only new one to worry about is the "Occasional noise/knocking on acceleration when steering", which could be expensive! What do you think? Is this something I could leave until I have cleared the list down to tackle next year? If it's something like the steering rack, then I need to save up for that!

Hi Chris,

For your paintwork and sills give Mark a call at G.R. Richardsons in Grange Way 01206 796543 go and see him and he will help and give you good sound advice.

I also know a guy called Steve who will be cheaper and works from home (he did my respray)

Your steering noise could be the bottom joint on the steering shaft, new shaft is around £80 I think

Thanks Andy, I'll definitely give that place a call about the bodywork. I've also been recommended to use a garage in Ipswich so have a couple of options now. A home spray job interests me, but would that only be for cosmetic touch-up spraying as aren't you supposed to use an oven to do a long-term job?

I hope it's a simple steering job!

I'd agree with Andy in relation to the steering issue, it's a common problem. While your in that area I'd also check the engine mounts as the one that side of the car is prone to heat from the exhaust which causes the engine to drop that side and can restrict and cause excessive wear to the steering arm.

Pete

That's not a bad list all told - the only expensive thing is the corrosion I think

much of the rest is livable with in the short term & can gradually be sorted. It will take you some time to work through though

Looking forward to starting it to be honest. Also, I have no garage, so will get one of those portable garage tent things (£150-200) to cover it over winter, and allow me to work in the dry.
