Boot catch leak

Common topic I know but wonder if anyone has had this exact problem?

I've had a small leak on the battery side of the boot lately. The carpet has been out drying, I replaced the boot seal the other day and tested for leaks but couldn't find any.

Had another look tonight with the view of putting the carpet back in but found that water was dripping off the end of one of the bolts holding in the boot catch receptacle thing! If you look closely in the pic you can see the drip on the end of the bolt.

Looking in to the catch hole from the top the rubber gasket looks in good condition but I'm thinking this is the only item that could need replacing. Also when I poured water in to the catch the other day I didn't notice it leaking through here but could have just missed it. Anyone know for sure from experience?

Cheers
Andy

Andy, the catch plate that holds the lock on rots nicely under the rubber. Worth stripping the whole lot out and changing the plate if they are corroded which they usually are as this stops the seal sittingflush against the bodywork and lets water past. Also fit 968 rubbers as they form a complete seal round the pin rather than the U shaped 944 ones. They are much better, the wuality of the 944 ones have been very poor lately. Alasdair

You have probably already checked this, but I had exactly the same problem and found that the drainage pipe was blocked. Easy enough to remove it and push a straightened-out wire coat hanger through it (high tech solution!).

Andy you need to strip the complete hatch lock mechanism out and treat any rust then refit everything with some grease/ vasoline and or silicon . I did mine last year and its stayed dry since . Oops sorry Alasdair i see you have already suggesd same[:(]

Cheers for the info - and the pics peanut! There's no rust or crud around mine so I hope they're not too bad. Is it an easy removal assuming the two bolts come out ok? I had checked the drain tubes, water clears them no problem

Checked yesterday and to be honest it all looked in good order. The rubber seal wasn't 100% perfectly seated in one corner of the body aperture so with a prod about and a refit it may have sorted the leak but I'm enquiring about new rubbers (968 ones) anyway as it wont do any harm

What sometimes happens when people replace the rubbers because they are awkward to get in they cut the wings down to help them fit and obviously they dont seal properly, yo might fnd with new ones in properly the seal is better, I coated mine in washing up liquid to help them slide into place.

So I picked up new rubber seals and the reinforcing plates that sit underneath from OPC yesterday. Now trying to fit and I can't get the rubber to sit flat inside the body aperture. You can see in the pic below how it's all bunched up.

I can't push the rubber any further underneath the bodywork so at a loss to know what to do now. Below is a pic of the old and new (different) type together.

Has anyone else fitted these new rubbers before, I'm not sure if I'm just missing the obvious here! Cheers Andy

There just very tight 2 get right, and split easy, very easy. Got 2 get new ones again after swapping from one car 2 the next. Don't over tighten the bolts as it will stop the claws opening, on the boot pins.

I had another go and still couldn't get it to sit any flatter, the old one has gone back in for now. I had recollection that someone here had fitted new ones before and had to cut them in order to get them to fit. Not something I want to risk but running out of ideas!

I fitted these 968 to mine I removed part of the tabs just kept about 4-5mm sticking out and they worked perfectly I have No leaks[:)] secret is as with most thing's.......plenty of lubrication[:D] and squeeze ....[:D][:D]

I noticed mine is leaking in exactly the same spot after inspection today, is that the part number on the 968 rubber? If it is I'll pop in to my local OPC in the week

LOL [:D] tbh I didn't have any issues actually getting them in, they just don't seem to go in far enough at the thin end. Part numbers for them Darryl are 944 512 366 02 and 944 365 02 as they're handed. Got them for £27.01 each plus VAT

Trying not to think about it Oli - just want my boot to be dry!! Ken - looking at your pics again, it looks like the ridge that runs around the top perimeter of the rubber is seating inside the hole in the body, I was under the impression that this ridge should be pushed under the lip of the body opening so you can't see it. Hope this makes sense? Just thinking looking at your pic, water could run between the ridge in the rubber and the body opening thus getting in to the boot. Confused now how it should be - although your boot you say is dry Any more help appreciated! Cheers Andy

NO just a bad picture the seal fits under the lip[:)] cut the tabs and lubricate well and it will pop straight in.....

Would make sense 4 the lip 2 fit under the metal as it would create a seal, but I did wonder, Looks like yours is bunching up front 2 back rather then left 2 right. So maybe its just the tabs stoping it
